My grandfather was a fun and loving man. I remember that when I was a child he would alway s tell me that he would dance at my wedding, when I got married for the first time in 1981 , I was married in his house. When my older sister Toni was being taught to drive, I became j ealous. My grandfather took me in his car for a driving lesson of my own. It was the last le sson that he gave me, as I ended up with his car in a ditch.
Lexie served during World War II. He was on Omaha Beach on D-Day(6-6-1944) and was part of t he Red Ball Express. Red Ball Express was in operation from August 25 to November 16, 1944.

Undated newspaper clipping, apparently from shortly after Friday December 11, 1970. Probably from the Caruthersville Democrat-Argus. Military Family Back to Germany Mrs. Richard Johnson and daughters, Tammy and Nancy, left Caruthersvile, Friday morning, Dec. 11, for Memphis and left there by plane for Nuremburg, Germany, to join their husband and father, Staff Sgt. Richard Johnson. Mrs. Johnson is the former Jeannette Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mfrs. Lexie D. Jones of 407 East 20th. For Jeanette the return to Nuremburg will be returning to some happy hours of her early life. Herfather is a retired Army Staff Sergeant, returing Jan. 31, 1967, with a rating of E-7 after 22 years of service, and the family moved back to Caruthersville. Mr. Jones and family spent several yearsin Germany at Army posts there. He was stationed and the family lived at Crailsheim, Germany, about 100 miles from Nuremburg, where Jeanette went to complete her high school education. It was while they were living at the Army post at Crailsheim that she met her future husband and they were married in the Crailsheim Post Chapel. Staff Sgt. Johnson left eary in November for his new post in Germany. They were living at an Army base near El Paso, Texas, when he received his new orders. They packed their furniture and shipped itto his new post and then he moved his family to Caruthersville to be with her parents until such time as suitable housing was available and the Army could arrange to move his family there. Mrs. Johnson and chidlren enjoyed Thanksgiving here with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Jones' son, Staff Sgt. John E. Jones, who returned to Vietnam in February to finish out an unfinished tour of duty with the Air Force, has completed that period of service and is headed back to the United State. He was expected to arrive in Memphis Wednesday or Thursday of this week to spend the Christmas holidays here with his wife Marsha, and their two daughters, Toni and Johnnie, and with his parents. After the holidays he will report to a base in Texas.
