Name: Samuel MCCLENDON ,Sr. 1 2 3 4 5
Birth: ABT 1756 in Cumberland Co., NC
Death: 11 DEC 1838 in Henry Co., Georgia
Will: Lincoln County Georgia
Key Fact Revolutionary War
Samuel McClendon, Sr. was the fourth child of Jacob and Martha. He was born about 1756 in Cumberland County, North Carolina and moved to Wilkes County, Georgia with his family in 1774.
It is known that he fought in the Revolutionary War. There is a document dated February 2, 1784 which certifies that he "did his duty" to help expel the British from Georgia during that war. He received 250 acres of land, free from taxes for 10 years, from the State of Georgia as a bounty for his service.
Samuel, Sr. and Sarah had 15 children. When Jacob McClendon, Sr. died in 1793, Samuel inherited 500 acres of land, including the plantation on which Samuel, Sr. lived at the time, and a Negro man named Neroe from his father. Also, as said, he received acreage for fighting in the Revolutionary War.
By the time Samuel, Sr. died, on December 11, 1838, he was a planter in Henry County, Georgia (county is located just to the east of Jonesboro, Georgia). His will is on file there. He left his entire estate to his wife, Sarah, with instructions that it be divided equally (with 2 exceptions) among his children upon her death. His grave has been marked by the D.A.R.
Sarah died August 7, 1853 in Henry County, Georgia, at the age of 91. There are court records concerning her death on file in the courthouse there as well.
There is a copy in The McClendon's, by T. A. McClendon, of a document dated May 2, 1839, produced by the Office of the Governor of Georgia. It concerns a land lottery held in 1839 for which evidently both Samuel, Sr. and Samuel, Jr. each qualified by way of war service (Jr. in the 1812 War). Evidently each drew their lots. Samuel, Sr.'s lot was incorrectly recorded originally, and this document corrected the error. The land involved was located in Early County, Georgia.
Note from Karen McClendon, Fall, 1997: I am somewhat puzzled by the date of this event since Samuel Sr. is said to have died December 11, 1838. The document states they "each" drew lots.
