ID: I21686
Name: John TREVEIGHEN
Suffix: Trevaine\Trevane\Trevan\Treveighen
Sex: M
Birth: 1698
Death: 12 MAY 1769 in Parish of Sheviock, Cornwall, England
Note: At the time John and Francis were married and living in the Parish of Antony, it was a thriving shipbuilding town. This parish lies in the extreme south east of Cornwall, including that part of the River Tamar which lies directly opposite to Devonport, which became a separate parish of Torpoint in 1819. They moved around several parishes in SE Cornwall notabley Antony, St. Germans and Landrake. It was sometime between 1730 and 1732 that they moved to St. Germans. The Parish lies in the south east of Cornwall on the banks of the River Tiddy.
John and Francis are buried at Landrake in the same grave, next to their son Sampson. Their headstone reads as follows:
"Here lyeth the body of John Trevan Senr who departed this life the 10th day of March 1769. Aged 71 years. Here also lyeth the body of Frances his wife who departed this life the 24th day of January 1774. Aged 70 years. Afflictions sore, long time we bore. Physicians were in vain, to ease us of our pain".
Although the headstone shows John's date of death as 10th of March, the transcript of the burial register (Devon and Cornwall Record Society) gives the entry as Trevane, John, of St. Germans - 12 May 1769
John left a will which no longer survives, but which is listed in "The Devonshire Association Transaction Calenders of Cornwall and Devonshire Wills". It was shown as a Devonshire Will as "1767 Trevan, John of St. Germans". Presumably the date 1767 refers to the year when the will was written and not when it was proved. Taken together with the text on his headstone this suggests that John was probably ill for a couple of years before he died. The will is neither with the Devon nor Cornwall record offices, and it is probable that it was destroyed in 1942 during WWII when many of the Devon records where hit by an incendiary bomb.
Their name was changed from Treveighen to Trevaine to Trevane to Trevan.
