!BIOGRAPHY: Written by Frances Campbell Foster: Among the (Foster) family
pictures and bits of information, I found a pocket size ledger. It didnot
have the owner's name written anywhere. It is written in an (apparently)
older person's handwriting. At the top of the first page is written "No.of
yards of carpet wove by Mrs. E, A. Foster". No date was given for thebeginning
of the record. On Sept 28, 1909, the total yardage was 3,589. Amount
    forwarded 6962, total yards to June 23, 1913, 7325. Nov 23, 1913, Amount7601.
The last entered date was Sept 15, 1915.amt. yds forwards 9000, total9,269.
Names of customers were listed along with the amount of yardage foreach. The
total amount probably does not include any carpet that Elizabeth Ann madefor
    her own home.
The usual method for having carpets woven was for the customer to providethe
"rug rags", and the weaver provided (included in cost) the cotton stringthat
was the warp of the carpet. The "rug rags" were strips of cloth stitchedinto
a long strip and rolled into balls. The total cost of the carpet was
determined by the amount of cotton string used, or by the length of the
finished product. The woven strips were hand sewn together to achieve the
desired width, or used singly as "throw rugs."
The carpet was usually "hit and miss" pattern. Using worn clothing tomake
the strips would have required a long time to collect enough for a carpet.
The total number of yards of carpet woven by Elizabeth Ann was 9,269,
    according to the ledger.
The maximum width of the loom probably was thirty two inches. Many ragrugs
made at that time were twenty five inches wide. The width of the carpetwas
    not mentioned in the ledger.
Editor's note: The census indicated that Betsy could not read or write so
someone else must have kept this record for her, probably Horace.
