  • Note:
Archibald Gardner was born in in 1814 in Kilsythe, Scotland--where his father, Richard Gardner Sr., was put in prison for speaking out against the Queen of England. Later found innocent and released, Richard packed up his family and sailed to Canada. There they homesteaded in Montreal, the children grew to adulthood, and eventually Archibald Gardner built his first mill. Archibald later emigrated to the United States and settled in the Great Salt Lake Valley in October of 1847. After building several mills in the Cottonwood area of Salt Lake, Archibald began construction of what was originally referred to as the West Jordan Flour Mill, in 1853. The mill, over the next century or so, fell into long periods of disrepair and abandonment. Purchased in 1987 by its current owners (and after years of hard restoration work), the West Jordan Flour Mill--which is now called The Gardner Mill--is listed on the National Historic Register and has received a Utah Heritage Award for the most improved commercial building.

"I woke up this morning and was thinking about a little history of the Gardner Village I thought I would share with you. Archibald Gardner, its founder, is my husband's great grandfather. Archibald's son Brigham Ozro Gardner's son Lloyd Gardner (Jerry's Dad passed away this past April 15, 2003, on tax day at the age of 94.) Here are a couple of stories for your "Gee Whiz File" or to share with the SL County Alliance today, so they will know a bit of the history where you are having lunch.
Archibald came from Scotland to Canada where he experienced a lot of persecution when he joined the LDS church in the 1840's. Mobs tried to kill him and he narrowly escaped on a horse riding to a grove of trees by the St. Clair River on the border between Canada and the USA. A famous story in the family goes like this: In that grove of trees, he knelt down and prayed for inspiration. He made it to the St. Clair River, it was spring of 1846. The ice had broken up and the river was running high and wild , with ice floes, some sticking 21 feet in the air. The miracle of the ice took place as he jumped from ice to ice. The roaring of the water continued, but the ice stood still so he could make it the one mile across the river to the USA side. When he reached the other side, people were lined the bank cheering for him and extended a pole to help him jump to the bank. Some yelled, "Are you an angel, or a devil? We have never seen the ice stand still like that before." It took him a couple of months, but he made his way to Nauvoo, Illinois to wait for his family to join him, with a goal to join the pioneers headed west. But when he arrived, Nauvoo was like a ghost town. The pioneers had been driven out of Nauvoo by mobs, 2,000 in February 1846 and another 10,000 in April. He had just missed them. They had their pick of abandoned homes to stay in. With much sacrifice his family joined him and they spent the winter of 1846 in Nauvoo, leaving and heading west in the spring of 1847. When he and his wife Margaret arrived in the valley of the Great Salt Lake in October of 1847 and stood overlooking the valley, he told her, as they looked down at the desert below and the salt lake in the distance, "Meg, this is all there is." She sat down on the tongue of the wagon and cried. She delivered a child six days later. She had walked across the plains the last months of her pregnancy.
Those first winters were very harsh and survival was difficult in the valley. They were there to experience the miracle of the gulls and the crickets. Archibald was a mill builder and directed water from the mountains by digging canals to West Jordan and other places. He was contemporary with Brigham Young and was a bishop in the valley for 30 years. Many histories record that families who wondered where their next meal was coming from, would wake to sleigh tracks in the yard and a sack of flour on their porch, milled at the Gardner mill where you are today. Archibald Gardner was a great pioneer who made a difference in what we enjoy in Salt Lake City today.
Just a little background and slice of history.
    Love, Colleen Gardner"

    Note:
A note received from Gordon Hillman of Sarnia, Ontario on 8 Dec 1998:
The area that the Gardner's were baptized is in my Ward boundries. It used to be called Gardner's Mills and is now known as Alvinston, in Lambton County, not Kent. After the Gardners and others in the area joined the church, they migrated to Nauvoo. They lacked a road to Port Sarnia, (now Sarnia-my hometown), so they cut a road out of the woods from Gardner's Mills to the Old Military Road. To this day that roadway is called, "Nauvoo Road", and in 1946, one hundred years after the migration, a plaque was erected in Alvinston that reads:

In 1846 a section of road was chopped through the forest to intersect the London Road by a group of converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints enroute from Gardner's Mills to Nauvoo, Illinois. Among them was Archibald Gardner, the first settleer of Alvinston, who build and operated the first grist mill in Brooke Township. The Nauvoo road legally sanctioned as a Brooke Township highway November 22, 1851, comprises that portion of Highway 79 from road allowance between concessions 8 and 9 to the northern boundary of the township. This stone from Gardner's Mill was contributed by the Brooke and Alvinston Agricultural Society to whom it was presented by Duncan J. McEachren, who provided for its removal from the original mill site on the east bank of the Sydenham River near Alvinston.

The stone and plaque were erected August 16, 1946 by Ontario members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, descendants and relatives of Archibald Gardner, and the Utah Pioneer Trails and Landmark Association.

Came to Canada on the ship "Buckingham" with mother and siblings.

This mill cost $33 to build. He also built a saw mill here as well.

    Built a grist mill here.

Archibald was re-united with his family here, after being run out of Canada by disgruntled business men.

10 June 1847 was the date this group of Saints left Winter Quarters for the Salt Lake Valley. They left with the 2nd company of 1500 people under the leadership of John Taylor. They were part of the second 100 wagons under the command of Captain Edward Hunter, and The third ten with Archibald Gardner as Captain.

Archibald left his Canada home and traveled to Nauvoo, then to Winter Quarters, Nebraska. During the travel from Canada to Winter Quarters, they were named "The Canada Company". They later left for the Salt Lake Valley, where he was a Captain of the company of 10.

Member of John Taylor's First Pioneer Company: In the 2nd Hundred; Edward Hunter, Captain: First Fifty, Joseph Horne, Captain: 3rd ten, Archibald Gardner, Captain. Organized and departed Winter Quarters: 17 Jun 1847 and arrived Salt Lake Valley 29 Sep 1847.
