Note: BIOGRAPHY: (from The Killam Tree by Carl <Spurgeon> Killam July 25, 1986) "Edward was a physician in Selma, Alabama area. He joined the Alabama army and served as a physician while on active duty. After he was discharged from the Army, he moved to the Indian Territory and lived in Muskogee, OK until his death. No record has been found of his alleged military service <since discounted, see below>. According to a document written by Dr. Marion Tarvin in Sep 1893, Lita lived with the family of George Tarvin in Okmugee, OK."
BIOGRAPHY: Edward was born in 1836, the first son of Esaw and Caroline Killam. Edward Kellam's family name was originally Killam and later changed. The family name is listed Kellam on the Dawes' Tribal roll, and Kellum on his marriage license. He is listed as 1/2 Creek from Hickory Ground, Monroe County, AL per Dawes' rolls. There is an interesting letter from Edward to Indian Chief Col Samuel Chicoty, Principle Chief of the Muskogee's, dated 30 Oct 1881, regarding a land dispute. Edward was a doctor per family members and confirmed by the 1860 census notes, but he is not listed in Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929 (genealogy.com). His newspaper ad's and a artifact we have list his specialty as: "Occultist & Midwife. Female Diseases And All private Diseases A Specialty", so perhaps he was not a licensed physician. He married Melita Ayers in Walnut Hills, AR in 1861. We have no information on Melita except she was listed as a "non-citizen" on the Dawes rolls. Killam served in the 15th Regiment, Confederate Cavalry. Company H, as a private. The Indian removal of the Creeks from Alabama to Oklahoma was from 1836 to 1837 but the census records show the Killams were not removed. Killam moved to the Indian Territory after the Civil War. It is curious that his child was born in IT but years later the wife died in Calhoun County Alabama. Notes on WFT vol 1 Tree 2888 say his sister, Caroline Killam Norman, moved to Creek Nation in Oklahoma in 1867 so perhaps Edward moved at the same time. After the war they had their only child, Melita born in 1869, in Checotah, Indian Territory. His wife died shortly after the birth in Anniston, Calhoun, AL. Baby Lita was raised by George Tarvin family. We don't have a specific date when Edward died or where he is buried. The best guess is between 1876 and 1899 and family notes say he died in Muskogee, Indian Territory. I spent quite a bit of time at the Muskogee county library checking volumes and volumes of cemetery records without finding Edward. Perhaps he was buried without a grave marker hence not in the listings.
