�/b�HERMISTON, Ore. � Esther A. Spomer, 99, of Hermiston,Ore., died Feb. 28 at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston. EstherAlberta Spomer was born Jan. 24, 1910, in Macon, Franklin County, Neb.Her parents were Ludwig and Ankea (Harms) Kostbahn. Her father was aLutheran pastor in Macon. After completing grade school in Macon, Estherwent to a Lutheran boarding high school in Hebron, Neb. She had alwaysenjoyed school and was able to develop her singing talents. She joined aglee club, chorus and quartets. She continued to enjoy singing throughouther lifetime.
Esther attended one year at Fort Hays College in Kansas. She took ayear off to teach at a country school before returning to finish a secondyear of college. It was at this time that her father was assigned to aLutheran church in Alexander. Esther met William Spomer, a young dentist,in her church and they were married, July 12, 1930. In 1932 their firstson, William A. Spomer Jr., was born.
The young family lived through the Dust Bowl and the Depression. WhenWorld War II began, William enlisted as a dentist. Esther and young sonWilliam moved with Dr. Spomer to his assignments. During this time theirsecond son, John, was born in Dalhart, Texas. There were times whenEsther was all alone with the two boys while Dr. Spomer had to go out onAir Force assignments. After the war they moved to McCracken. Thefamily's final move was to Larned in 1952, her home for 40 happy years.Both sons followed their father into the medical field; William became aphysician and John became a dentist.
Esther always kept busy. She was an active member of Grace LutheranChurch, Grace Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Larned Garden Club,Larned Music Club, Pawnee County Food Pantry (for 17 years), LarnedLibrary Board (16 years). Esther was a charter member of St. Joseph'sHospital Auxiliary in Larned and a volunteer worker at the nursing homeand at the Larned State Hospital children's ward. She also enjoyedhelping catalog items that were donated to the Santa Fe Trail Center inLarned. Esther loved crossword puzzles; she was an avid reader and a finequilter.
In July 2001, Esther decided to move to Hermiston to be near herfamily. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of P.E.O.Her last home was at Rose Arbor Assisted Living. Esther kept active andenjoyed the friendship of the residents and the assistants and nursesthat gave her loving care. Esther was a gracious lady. She dedicated herlife to serving God and wanted others to share her joy in Christ.
She is survived by her son, Dr. John L. Spomer and his wife, Janet ofHermiston, Ore.; granddaughter, Abigail Spomer of Redmond, Ore.;grandson, Barry Spomer and his wife Lisa and great-grandsons, Stryker andTyler of Seattle, Wash. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Dr.William A. Spomer; son, Dr. William A. Spomer Jr.; daughter-in-law,Elizabeth Jean Spomer; granddaughter, Barbara Jean Spomer; parents;brother, Carl Kostbahn; and sister, Alvina Kostbahn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace LutheranChurch in Larned with Pastors Richard Boyer and Lloyd Sprink presiding.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at BeckwithMortuary Chapel, Larned. Burial will follow at the Larned Cemetery.
