p 17 "Jesse CATON and Jacob HAMMER had blazed the trail...The next group came to the Willamette Valley in 1847. Included in this party were our first BELKNAPS: Hannah BELKNAP GILBERT and her husband Dow; Ransom BELKNAP and his wife Mahala; Kumah [Cumi?] BELKNAP STARR and her husband, Samuel; and Orrin BELKNAP, a cousin of the others.
"Early in the spring [of 1848] our first BELKNAP party, anxious to be settled, started south [of the Mary's River] in search of a good place to build. When they reached the hills north of Lick Skillet [Moroe], they turned west and followed the edge of the hills until they came to Jesse CATON's cabin...Each found a building spot, with a live spring, above flood danger...The STARR's, Samuel and Kumah, apparently backtracked a few miles to stake their claim at the Long Tom River, where the hill comes close to the water north of Lick Skillet.

Be it remembered that on this the 8th day of July A. D. 1851 the Probate Court sitting as a Board of Co. Com. in and for the County of Benton Convened and commenced its session at Marysville in said Co. The Hon. O. F. CLARK, Geo. BELKNAP and Jno. STEWART Judges thereof and S. F. STARR, Sheriff, were present.
Ordered that S. F. STARR be allowed and paid out of the County Treasury the sum of $6.00
for 2 days attendance as Sheriff and for opening Court 4 times, each 25¢, 1.00 Total: $7.00

Starrs Point, situated 16 miles south of Corvallis and a little north of the present site of Monroe, was established Apr. 22, 1852, with Saml. F. Starr first postmaster.

Moses STARR, who was born in Virginia on June 22, 1787, crossed the plains with his family in 1853. He died a few days after their arrival in Clackamas county. His widow took a claim a mile and a half from Monroe. Moses STARR was a local preacher and class leader. Five of his sons were Methodist ministers. One, Samuel F., was the first sheriff of Benton county.
