  • Note: "On 28 August [1896] George's 19-year-old grandson, George William Catherman, was shot and killed in Milton [Pennsylvania] by one Melvin St. Clair. The murderer fled the scene but returned a few days later and was taken to the Northumberland County jail by his uncle. The trial began on 8 December and on the 12th the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The verdict was met with almost unanimous disapproval, and newspapers up and down the Susquehanna Valley printed scathing editorials against this travesty of justice."       Text: Death of Mr. Geo. Catherman of Mazeppa.
      Mr. Geo. Catherman died at his home at Mazeppa on Nov. 7th, aged 83 years, 4 months and 7 days. The deceased was held in high esteem by his many acquaintances, and he was one of the county's best tillers of the soil, having farmed for a number of years near Black Run. He was a faithful and consistent member of the Lutheran Church, and is survived by his widow and five children, three daughters and two sons. Funeral services were held Tuesday following, conducted by his pastor, Rev. B. F. Bieber, and interment made in Mazeppa cemetery.
