Note: From Grant Collard, Sep 2000. Thomas Weeks Jr was born on 25 March 1850 in Dudley, Worcester, England, the son of Thomas Weeks Sr and Rebecca Wakelam. At the time of his birth he had an older sister Hannah and would eventually have siblings Emma, Ephraim, Rachel, Heber, Israel, and Martha. He was born in the coal mining section of Kates Hill in Dudley which was a highly industrialized and mining area about 8 miles west of Birmingham in central England; the Dudley area at his birth had about 38,000 people. The 1851 Census lists the family at #86 St Johns Road where his father Thomas 29 was a coal miner with his wife Rebecca 26 and daughter Hannah 2 and son Thomas 1. His father had joined the LDS church in 1850 and eleven years later the family now consisting of seven children immigrated the United States. They left from Liverpool on 23 April 1861 on the ship Underwriter with a Mormon immigrant company of 624 people and arrived in New York City on 24 May 1861 at the time the Civil War was in progress. The family journeyed to Kewanee, Illinois where evidently they had friends from England. Since Thomas Jr was 11, years old at the time it is not known the extent of schooling that he received in England and in Kewanee. In Kewanee his father continued as a coal miner in some of the local mines. His mother died in 1864. In the 1870 census of Kewanee he is listed along with the family as Thomas age 20. He married Mary Ann Dixon and she died in childbirth. Then on 16 Sept 1880 he married Sarah Jenkins at Streator in central Illinois. At Streator their three children were born: Bertha, Elmer and Edgar. Thomas worked as a mine inspector. Thomas died at the age of 61 on l2 August 1911 at the St Johns Hospital in Springfield and was buried in Bloomington. Sarah later lived in Evanston evidently with her widowed daughter Bertha, and people remember her as being quite healthy and active. She died in the Masonic hospital in Chicago of arterio-sclerosis on 23 January 1950 at the age of 93. Her funeral was at the First Presbyterian church of Arlington Heights and she was buried in the Oakridge cemetery at Hillside, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.
