Johann Henrich Stoehr, who generally went by the name of Henry Stair, was the son of Philipp Henrich Stoehr and Anna Maria Holler. He was born on 23 August 1769 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. As young men, Henry and his brother, Johannes (John), moved to Virginia, where they are shown on the 1782-1787 tax records for that State as residing in Hardy County (Hardy County is now situated within the state of West Virginia).
Although no marriage record has been found, it is believed that Henry was married sometime in the early 1790's, probably in Virginia, or what is now West Virginia. His wife was Mary Magdalene Landis, the daughter of Peter Landis and Eva Byers. Mary, who was also a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had been born there on 13 November 1773.
Although Henry eventually moved into Botetourt County, Virginia, the actual date he arrived there is not known. The earliest records which were found in that County that pertained to him were a number of property deeds which were recorded in 1803. According to the legal description of some of his property, Henry and Mary settled along Looney's Mill Creek. Even though all of their nine children are believed to have been born in Virginia, only the last four or five are felt with any certainty to have been born in Botetourt County. All of their children were married there, however. Over the years, most of Henry and Mary's offspring moved from Virginia to settle in Indiana and Wisconsin.
Henry and Mary remained in Botetourt County, Virginia for the remainder of their lives. Mary
died there on 28 January 1854, while Henry died there on 12 April 1858.
