Note: Information about William Calhoun that was emailed by a descendant of William's that lives in S. Dakota. She says: Her grandmother was Bessie Brown Sanborn, the daughter of Clifford Sanborn and Etta Rachel Calhoun. Sarah Jane Fuller was born in Indiana and was 17 when she married John Fuller. Before the Civil War broke out, they moved to Rolla, MO; when war started John Fuller joined the Confederate Army and was killed, leaving Sarah Jane with 2 small children, John Jr & Martha. Sarah's mother Mary Deem had come to stay with and help Sarah Jane. To support her family, Sarah walked and planted corn for 50 cents a day. One day she came home to no house - bushwackers had burned it because they thought she was hiding soldiers in the cellar. Her mother & children escaped to a neighbors. Etta's story says Sarah met & married William Calhoun at Rolla, Mo. (but I have the marriage registry of William marrying Sarah in McLean Co. Illinois in 1859). Sarah & William met when he was a union soldier. Her email states they lived at Leroy (1880 census) which they did but an earlier census I have shows them at Downs, IL. lst in 1870 William & Sarah Jane had the following children: William, Rebecca Marie, C. Walter, Etta Rachel (1875), Jennie & Teena (Tina?), all born in IL.
Mother of Sarah Jane, Mary Deem appears with the Calhoun family on the 1880 census in Illinois. I wonder if the Deem name is a lst or 2nd marriage. Sarah's daughter Mattie Fuller marriage registry that I have show her mother's maiden name was Padget/Padgett instead of Deem. There were Padget's living close to William in the country at Downs, IL.
OBIT: (copy in files) Little River, Rice County, Kansas, Thursday 3/24/1921 - MRS. W.A. CALHOUN Sarah J. Padgett was born in Owen County, Indiana, May 28, 1841. She more than lived out her allotted three-score and ten, being 79 years, 9 months and 25 days old when she passed to her reward. On April 26, 1916, she suffered a stroke of paralysis which made her an invalid and in September 1919, she suffered another stroke. Since the last stroke she has been unable to talk. During all the four years of her affliction she had been beautifully patient. From early womanhood she was a member of the Christian church, but united with the M.E. church at Little River in 1902 of which she was a consistent member at the time of her death.
