  • Note:
Joseph married Ann Victoria Spendlove in Virgin. She was born May 18, 1835, in Stanion, North Hampshire, England to John Spendlove and Mary Slawson. She was the last child in the
family. Her mother died Dec. 31, 1836, when Ann Victoria was about a year and a half old. She was raised in the family home by older brothers and sisters until she was a few years
old. She then went to live with her oldest brother John. This was the first time she knew what a real home and love was. She remained with John until she was married. The Spendloves
came to Virgin in 1863. Ann was small in stature, dark wavy hair and very good
looking. She was dignified and proud. True to her english tradition she loved her black, rustling silk dresses, and as we would say today "put on the style".
Two children Joseph Walter and Ann Elizabeth were born in Virgin and then the family moved to Toquerville about 1867 and remained about two years. Two more children Mary Hannah
and Sarah Jane were born here.

Grandpa rode in a small black topped buggy, when he took grandmother to Orderville to visit with their daughter Hannah, who was the wife of David Esplin. Sometimes one of us was invited to ride with him when grandma did not go along. Grandmother when her hair was almost gray would allow us to comb it, curl it, wet it and fuss with it in child fashion. I have heard it said that when sugar was so scarce and expensive, that few people had any, she could find a lump in her pocket to drop in her own cup of tea.
Also my father often told us of the peach preserve incident. Grandmother had made a crock of peach preserve out of real sugar (not molasses) and hid it away for her own use and for special guests. Ben by accident found it, sampled it and during a period of time sampled it to the very last. When Grandmother found out what had happened it called for strict discipline.
Father On another occasion when Johnnie had been trying his first smoke it made him real sick. He didn't dare go to the house so he laid on a bed under the tamarack trees up by granary where the boys some times slept. Someone told grandma that Johnnie was sick and she came up to see what she could do. When she found that he had been smoking she turned and walked towards the house. The other boy said, "Ma aren't you going to do something," she said, "I hope hee's sick enough to die."

    GRANDMA HOPKINS
Sometime before I was 13 years of age Grandpa and Grandma Hopkins made a trip to Virgin, to visit old friends, where they were married and lived some length of time before moving to Long Valley. Now Grandpa was prosperous in Glendale for that period of time. Grandma wore lovely little fine straw and silk bonnets (had more than one for she showed them to me many times). She had lovely black silk dresses other women didn't have. She had a brother in England who was a goldsmith who sent her lovely earrings, broaches and rings so she was really a lady when in hall dress. (She had a small trim figure,,)
In telling me of her trip to Virgin she said these words in her English accent "Oh azel I did put on the hagonies Well before I was 14 I want to 'Virgin with Father and Mother to can fruit. I was old enough to see the poverty of those fine people and try to understand why Grandma could do such a thing to old friends.
