TRANSCRIPT OF MARRIAGE BOND FOR JOHN ENDSLEY AND HANNAH CAIN, GUILFORD CO., NC, 15 JANUARY 1773:
Know all men by these presents that we John Andslay [sic] & Russil Cain ________ confirm by bond to our Sovering [Sovereign] Lord Thee King, his heirs & __________, in the full and just sum of eighty pounds do proclaim money for which payment with & truly to bond to our Sovering [Sovereign] Lord Thee King, his heirs and ___________, bond ourselves and each of our heirs __________ _____ jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals & dated this 15 day January 1773.
The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas John Andslay [sic] hath made application for a license for marriage to be celebrated between him and Hannah Cain of Guilford agreeable to ______ Act of Assembly of this Province 4th day of April (1741? 1761?). Now if it shall appear at any time that there is ________ _________ fulfilling this contract the said marriage then the above obligation shall be void and of none effect, (else?) remaine in full force & virtue.

(Marriage bonds were once required in Colonial America, and in England, when applying for a marriage license. If any reason arose that prevented you from legally marrying, after you'd said you could legally marry, the bond was sort of like a pre-agreed fine you would have to pay the government or King.)
