James D. Elder and family were found in Lincoln and Madison Counties in Kentucky over in the eastern part of the state. My line of Elder's were in Livingston, Caldwell and Crittenden Counties in the western part of the state. I have made in my online file two different James Elder's, one with the middle intial of "D" yours and one with the middle name of "Dickey" in my line. From everything I have found so far it is looking more and more like there are really two different James D. both born about the same time period. I will keep you posted if I find anything else. Vickie Beard Thompson PO Box 177 Morgan, UT 84050 801-829-4267 801-388-5685 James Baxter Elder's marriage license gave birthplace of parents Frank Morris 1937 correspondence with Aunt Irene gives death date or from a family bible. 1850 census says schoolteacher in Adair Co. and wife N.E., these initials fairly clear. Shows her born in 1820. 1870 ppty-2000,Pers. ppt $500 and occupation as farmer. Shows older couple living on place in different house. Area where he came from was Lincoln Co. prior to 1798, then Livingston Co. until about 1840 when it was divided into several counties, including Crittenden for the area he had been in. Several Elder brothers came from S. Carolina to this area in 1795. They had left S.C. in late 1794, wintered in Tn. then migrated to what is now Moxley's landing N. of Paducah. This according to Livingston Co. History from 1796 to 1990. The father of these brothers was George or William and he died in the Rev. War. Brothers James, Thos., Wm. John, Alexander and Robert came to Ky. Samuel remained in S.C. Thelma Phillips shows him as the 6th child of George and Nancy Agnes Elder and married to Margaret Dodd. Middle name from Frank Beard, another descendent of George and Nancy. Thelma Phillips shows him born in Caldwell Co.

Frank Beard shows George or Wm Elder dying in S.C. abt 1780 to 86 but cause not shown. He shows brothers William, John, James coming to Ky. to live and David dying enroute. He cites family Bible of John C.Elder.
Frank Beard shows James Dickey Elder baptized as an infant in Bethany Presby Church in Marion, Ky. in 1816. Dismissed from church in 1838 Apparently moved to what his brother Samuel Henry called northern Ky.prior to lawsuit filed by Samuel about1867.
1860 shows him in Oldham Co. with 7 children. Shows he was a famer with $2900 real estate and $550 personal property. Says he was b Va.! George was a charter member of the Bethany Presb. Church of Marion, Ky.
1803. Lyndell Storey says he was a preacher before coming to Oldham Co.

    Father: George ELDER b: 20 NOV 1772 in ,Spartanburg,SC
Mother: Nancy Agnes HENRY b: 25 SEP 1785 in ,Pendleton,SC
Nancy Agnes HENRY (Samuel, James) was born on 25 Sep 1785 in , Pendleton, South Carolina. She died on 8 May 1866 in , Crittenden, Kentucky and was buried in May 1866 in Old Marion Cem., Crittenden, Kentucky.

All the girls listed for Samuel Henry in 1800 were listed as being under the age of 10 years. Nancy would have
been 15 years old in 1800.

Vickie Beard Thompson, Frank's daughter, says James Dickey was a minister of the gospel and never married according to an old Family Bible.

A lady by the name of Velanie Clayton in Marion, Kentucky had some of the old bibles at one time. I heard she died a couple of years ago. My father had visited with her a few times and got information from her. The bible that mentioned James Dickey Elder belonged to George Washington Elder and his wife Mary Ann Leach Elder. The notation said that James Dickey Elder was a minister of the gospel and never married. I had never looked further for him as he must have left Crittenden and Livingston county early and I did not try to find him.
I was born in Crittenden County so I know the area very well. I go home every year for two weeks and look for more info. A lot of the Elders like George and Nancy were buried at the Old Marion Cemetery. They had very nice markers at one time but this year when I was home the markers were gone. There were very few markers left in the cemetery. It has been neglected for sometime and only gets mowed every so often.
James Dickey's brother Samuel Henry was my 3rd great-grandfather.
If I can answer any other questions for you just let me know.
    Merry Christmas,

Nancy & J.B., I have found some more things on Dodd Elder and family and added in what Nancy had sent and updated my online site. Here is the link: I am beginning to think that James D. Elder could be a son of Robert Elder who was in Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1840. If he is his son he is not related to my line of Elder's those Elder's were from Pennsylvania. Maybe the family bible my Dad had found that said James Dickey Elder was a minister and never married is correct. Also James D. Elder is listed as a school teacher in 1850 and a farmer the rest of the time on the census records and never a minister. What are your thoughts on this matter?
