4th April 2003, discovered Kate's birth certificate! using the Rootsweb BMD facility. Will now write away for a copy. [Basingstoke, volume2c page179] I phoned the office and they said that if the record says 'Basingstoke' then write to Basingstoke. The fee is now 7. Received the certificate, no father mentioned but address given as New Road, Eastrop, Basingstoke.

    1881 census.
19th August 1996 at Hants RO. The 1881 census shows Kate H Goodyear living with her mother Eliza and grand parents Stephen and Jane. The Annetts family lived 2 doors away with a Thomas living there, probably the future husband of Eliza. I await the marriage cert. of the latter. Certificate now obtained.

    1881approximately
On the back of the frame of the photo of Kate taken in a photographic studio is the following engraved in to the brass leg:--
    F Aldis, 11 Belgrave Mansions.

I wrote the following to the Rootsweb London List in June 2003:-
My wife's grandmother born in 1875, was illegitimate. I am trying to trace
her father. We have a picture of her aged about 15 in a photographic studio,
very beautifully dressed and coiffed, which does not square with her
background which is that of daughter of a a laundress who was employed at a
grand country estate. It does however agree with the family legend that she
was sent to a private school by her father and received a substantial
allowance from him for the whole of her life.
The photograph is in a very fine brass frame and has, engraved on the back,
the name 'F Aldis, 11 Belgrave Mansions' but gives no other clue as to the
    location.
The 1881 census gives the following entry for a London Belgrave Mansions:-
11 Belgrave Mansions, Census Place: St George Hanover Square, London.
The occupant was a head servant to a jeweller. Maybe he lived over the shop
which could have sold picture frames as well as jewellery?
It might help to corroborate the theory of a wealthy father if this was the
Belgrave Mansions referred to on the photo frame. Is it possible for anyone
to tell whether the 11 Belgrave Mansions in London is, or ever could have
    been, a jewellers or photographers?
Incidentally I have a suspect for the putative father, an Edward Thomas
Henry Hutton, and also am in touch with other people who descend from his
    other possible illegitimate children.
    regards,
    jim wishart, northampton,

I received the following reply on July 14th 2004:-
Belgrave Mansions is now known as Grosvenor Gardens House, 35-37 Grosvenor Gardens. It was originally a block of mansion flats that had shops at the street level, so it is possible that one of those was a photographers. It is also possible that the shops occupied accomodation above at first floor. The census entry is curious and may have been at a different time to that of the photographer. I am still researching this block and may turn up something else. The numbering has all changed, and it was converted to offices after WW1

    PRIVATE SCHOOL
The story in the family is that Kate was sent away to a boarding school. I have had an email from Sidney Eggar who is a grandson of an illegitimate child of Sir Edward Hutton. Here is what he wrote on 19th May 2003
Hi Jim , hope you are well, its been along timesince I sent you a email. I have now retired and have now had time to follow up some leads I have had for some time , which has led to one breakthrough. My gr. father went to King Edwards School in Bath, I even a photo of him at the school, this was a boys private school and there was connections with the Hutton/Lawrence fam. on the administration side at this school and also with The Royal School Bath which was a girls school , this school was close by. Might well be worthcontacting them as the KES School gave two or three scholarships each year to girls to attend other schools Best wishes Sid
So I am now going to do some research on this school and see if Kate was sent there.

    1891 census.
20th May 03, sending emails to Rootsweb County lists to see if I can find Kate at boarding school. So far have sent Somerset, Berkshire, Surrey, Wiltshire, and Hampshire.

    1892
See Edward Gill's notes for marriage in 1892. 8.5.96 at Nton LDS looked for m of Kate. 27th July 1996 found Kate's marriage at Petersfield and her maiden name.
30th July 2001, Joan Donnelly phoned and said that she had just found a marriage certificate issued on the date of marriage, of Kate to Edward Gill. It gave the father of Kate as James Hutton, occupation 'Miller'. I wrote to the Register Office and they wrote back saying that the reference to James Hutton did not come from them, it must have been added after issue. Search in the 1881 census for a James Hutton born about 1850, occupation Miller. This certificate conflicts with a copy obtained from the Petersfield RO in 1996 which had a blank for Kate's father's name. Searched the 1901 census for a James Hutton, of the same age as Kate. None of whom were Millers or anything like. However there is a James Hutton gardener, domestic, living in Winchester with his parents, in Parchment Street, born Bentworth. Still, sounds unlikely.

    1937
She was described as Kate Hutton Gill on her grave.

    ..............................................................................................................................................................
    Outdated archive:-
There is a St Katherine's House entry for first quarter 1874 2c 90 for the birth of Kate Goodyear. sounds promising. 27 July 1996
and there is also a Kate Goodyear b at Upton same quarter ref 6c 357. I followed both of these leads up through St K's and drew a blank because the mother's surname was not Goodyear.
