Michs. 1808; B.A. 1812. D.C.L. (Oxford) June 10, 1834. Capt. of Ashford Regt. of Kentish local Militia, 1809; Lieut., Northants. Regt. of Yeomanry, 1819; Lieut.-Col., East Kent Yeomanry, 1830. D.L. for Kent, 1820, and for Lincs., 1831. Succeeded his cousin, George Finch, as 10th Earl of Winchilsea and 6th Earl of Nottingham, Aug. 2, 1826. Strongly in favour of Protestant principles. Author of a pamphlet, Earl of Winchilsea's Letter to the Times, calling upon the Protestants of Great Britain ‘to unite heart and soul in addressing the throne for a Dissolution of Parliament,’ 1851. Married (1) Georgiana Charlotte, dau. of James, Duke of Montrose, July 26, 1814; (2) Emily Georgiana, dau. of Sir Charles Bagot, G.C.B., Feb. 15, 1837; (3) Fanny Margaretta, dau. of Edward Royd Rice, of Dane Court, Kent, Oct. 17, 1849. In the House of Lords violently opposed the Reform Bill and every Liberal measure. The only English nobleman willing to identify himself with the Orange party in Ireland, and denounced Daniel O'Connell, Maynooth, and the system of education in that college. Vehemently hostile to the Catholic Relief Bill, 1829, fighting a duel over it with the Duke of Wellington in Battersea Fields, Mar. 21, 1829. Died Jan. 8, 1858, at Haverholme Priory, Lincs.     From the Winchilsea article:
    An extreme Tory; took an active part in opposition to the Reform Bill and all Whig measures; a strong Protectionist and zealous Protestant. Identified himself with the Orange party in Ireland; his hostility to the Catholic Relief Bill led to his duel with the Duke of Wellington on 21 March 1829, when he fired in the air.
