  • Change Date: 11 APR 2017
  • Note:
"Edward Ridley Colbourne Bradford (1836-1911) was the son of the Rev. W. M. K. Bradford, rector of Westmeon, Hampshire. He was educated at Marlborough and at the age of seventeen joined the Madras Cavalry. He reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1879, and colonel in 1884. He took part in the Persian campaign of 1857 and twelve years later superintended operations to suppress the Thugee and Dacoitee in India. He went through the Indian Mutiny and was present at Lucknow. Whilst in India Bradford, a keen sportsman, enjoyed tiger shooting. He suffered a serious injury as a result of this when a wounded tigress that he had failed to kill sprang on him and seized his left arm just above the elbow. Realising the futility of struggling, Bradford walked several yards with the animal dragging at his arm until a friend was able to shoot and kill the beast. It was necessary to amputate his arm at the shoulder, but he had, at least, survived. On returning to England he was for some time Secretary of the Political and Secret Department of the India Office. Bradford was knighted in 1885, and appointed A.D.C. to the Queen in 1889.
In 1890 he was appointed as Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, replacing Monro when he resigned. Bradford, a small man, was described as quiet, genial, but with fierce courage, and the police loved him. To thousands of Londoners he became known as 'The little one-armed Commissioner.' At this time of turmoil, public distrust and police disorganization, it is said that Bradford's energy, tact and firmness brought to the force a high state of efficiency and he regained public confidence in the police. He was a keen horse rider and often compensated for his lost arm by taking the reins in his teeth. This method he employed when he went out pig-sticking, guiding his galloping Arab with his teeth and striking at the pigs with a spear with his one arm. He was twice married.
On 13 May 1911 Bradford suffered an apoplectic seizure in South Audley Street, near his home, and was carried indoors by two of his footmen and died."
