    From the record for Mersham Church - on a stone in the church, and on a brass:
    "Here lyeth buryed the body of Richard Knatchbull, Esquier, who dyed the 22d of Augus[t], 1582, being of the age of 57 yeres."
    The tablet in memory of his son Richard gives a fuller record of the father's issue:
    "Here lieth the body of Richard Knatchbull, esq. of Mersham, who died the 20th of January 1590, being of the age of 36 yeeres; he was the eldest son of that Richard Knatchbull who lieth at the entrance of this chancel, who had two wives; the first was Joane Sheafe, by whome he had two sonnes, this Richard and John, and fowre daughters, Alice, Ann, Elizabeth, and Katherine; the second was Susan Greene, by whome he had fowre sons, Norton, Thomas, John, and George, and two daughters, Ursula and Marie. The issue male of Joan Sheaf were thus matched; this Richard married Ann Scott, the second daughter of Sir Thomas Scott, knt. by whome he had Thomas Knatchbull; and John married Elizabeth Scott, the fourth daughter of the said Sir Thomas Scott, who died without issue. The issue male of Susan Green were thus matched: Norton had two wives, the first Ann Wentwort [sic], the eldest daughter of Paul Wentwort, of Burneham, in the county of Buck, esq. His second wife was Bridget, the second daughter of John Astley, esq. who was master and treasurer of the jewels and plate of Queen Elizabeth. Thomas married Elmoore the third daughter of the said John Astley, by whom he had seven sonnes, Richard, Norton, Francis, Thomas, Astley, John, George, and fowre daughters, Bridget, Margaret, Susanna, and Alice; John died unmarried, George married Joane Gilbert, the daughter of Thomas Gilbert, esqr. who died without issue."
