<Imanewtoo@aol.com> May 13, 2000, Tennessee (Oakes) Norton was the d/o Norton Oakes & Wealthy Mariah Toler) Oakes. I doubt the John W. Norton on the 1880 Obion Co. Tn census with wife Tennessee age 30 is Josephus Norton and my Tennessee Oakes. My Tennessee Oakes was 21 on the 1860 Obion County census, no mention of Josephus (could have been away in Civil war?) living with her is Cordelia (female) age 11 and Lucy Sealins (female) age 4. I'm pretty sure Lucy Sealins is Tennessee and Josephus Nortons daughter. By the 1870 Obion Co. census Lucy is 14 years old and living with her Grandmother W. M. Oakes age 64. Why wasn't she living with Tennessee?
In 1872 I know that Tennessee (Oakes) Norton was alive, and married to a man with last name of Miles. She (Tennessee) along with my G.G. Grandfather John Wesley Oakes sold 562 acres of their Father Norton Oakes (deceased) land.
She has signed her name as Tennessee N. Miles. I can't find Tennessee Miles after that land transfer document.
Extremely interested in the will of William S. Norton where it mentions Jane Norton married to James Oakes. Do you think this couple could be the parents of Norton Oakes ? James Oakes and Jane Norton? and Grandparents of Tennessee (Oakes, Norton) Miles? Norton Oakes supposedly was born in Wake Co. NC about 1799. Would those dates fit do you think?
