    Some Ogg Family Histor y

    by William Raymond Ogg< /b>

    Robert Ogg

A "Robert Ogg" was among the pioneer adherent s* of the Methodist Episcopal
Church which was founded in Barnesville Ohio in 1810, according to Dempse y
    Orville Sheppard, M. D. in his book, "The Story of Barnesville 1808& #160; 1940 (F. J.
    Heer publishing Go. 19420 p.147)

In 1818 the name of "Robert W. Ogg" was on a petition for a ne w county to be
formed out of the western part of Belmont county, the northwest part of M onroe
County and the eastern part of Guernsey County the town of Barnesville wa s to
be the county seat.  (Apparently the petition was not approved.  ; Noble County
was formed in a later action.)

Noble County was formerly a part of Belmont County.  Belmont Count y was
formed from Washington County on Sept. 7, 1801; Marietta, Ohio was the co unty
seat of Washington County.  Belmont County included the present terr itory of
Monroe, Noble County and part of Guernsey Counties

Barnesville, Ohio was established in 1809 by a man named Barnes. It was o n
the National Road from Baltimore, Md. westward to the Northwest Territor y (Now
Route 40).  In 1796, the Government of the Northwest Territory bega n work on
re building the National Road.  Formerly it has been a trail cleare d through the
wilderness and reinforced with logs. It became a leading artery to the we st over
which flowed an ever increasing flow of settlers moving westward and trad ers
    and travellers.

(Editors Note - the lineag e described below concerning George Ogg has now
    been proven incorrect.

       Signed - James C. Ogg)

It is likely that one of the descendants of George Ogg Sr. of Baltimore C ounty.
Md. travelled to obtain a farm and set up a home near Barnesville, Ohio , which
was located along this highway, from Baltimore to the west. The author ha s not
been able to establish this connection as yet but it appears probable tha t William
Ogg or another son of George Ogg Jr. or one of George Ogg Jr's grandsons
perhaps Robert Ogg was the one who settled here.

It also appears likely that Robert Ogg may have been the father of Youn g Ogg
who was the father of George William Ogg of Douglass, Kansas; and that
another son of Robert A. Ogg may have the Robert Ogg of Kokomo, Indiana , a
cousin of George Ogg of Douglass, both of whom grew up on adjoining farm ; or
alternatively Young Ogg may have been the son of a brother of the Rober t A.
Ogg referred to in 1810. In any case, George V. Ogg of Douglass and Rober t
Ogg both grew up an farms near Barnesville, Ohio, and Young Ogg, father o f
George W. Ogg moved to Kansas with his entire family after the end of th e Civil
    War.

Mr. Barnes, the founder of Barnesville, Ohio signed a contract with Rev . James
    M. Round to donate 2 acres of land for a Methodist Episcopal Church nea r the
village of Barnesville. In the summer of 1809, Bishop Francis Asbury, th e famous
Methodist circuit rider bishop, while on an episcopal tour (he travelled
extensively on horseback, conducting evangelistic meetings, founding chur ches,
and supervising the growing churches and their pastors) stopped with Rev.
Round, preached a sermon and selected two acres to be donated for a churc h. It
seems likely that Robert Ogg and family probably heard this sermon.

The women sat on the north side and the men sat on the south side.  ; This
church apparently was a part of the Methodist Wills Creek Circuit which i ncluded
Belmont County and several other counties.  Rev. James B. Findley wa s named
the circuit rider for this circuit in 1809.  He was a former frontie rman who had
won fame as a guide and frontierman in the Northwest Territory and in the
opening of Kentucky to settlement. He was an outstanding minister. The au thor
seems to recollect his father and his brothers speaking about him as an e loquent
preacher. Apparently Rev. Round was a local minister who devoted part tim e
work to the ministry.  He lived in Barnesville until 1834.

In 1822 a new brick church was built and years later a larger church wa s erected
in Barnesville. "This church at Barnesville was the preaching plac e during the
greatest epoch of Methodism is the town.  Here as great men, preache d as ever
illumined that faith.  Within its walls, eloquence, logic and learni ng unexcelled
anywhere were expended to save the sinner and to cheer on the saint." ;  (The
Story of Barnesville, by Dr. Dempsey Orville Sheppard, M.D., F. J. Beer
