JEAN MARIE - IS HE OUR "IMMIGRANT"?

There are several versions regarding the origin of th e Boicourt name in America.
Most descendents feel that this family story is the correct one:

Jean-Marie LaProne deBoicourt sailed from France in 177 7, destined for
America leaving behind his native land, many friends and relatives, and t wo
brothers who were Catholic priests.  He landed in Georgetown, Sout h Carolina
on April 19, 1777 with his countryman, the Marquis deLafayette. On this v oyage,
his duty as doctor/surgeon was to care for the sick and later the dying a mong
    Lafayette's soldiers.

Jean-Marie married Louise Sandvig or Sanvig.  To t he couple were born at least
nine children, five boys and four girls, all were born in Westmoreland Co unty,
Virginia.  Edward, the oldest settled in Illinois, Silas and Felix h omesteaded in
Indiana, Thomas went to Kansas and Samuel LaProne chose Kentucky. The
girls probably married and raised families, but are not mentioned in fami ly
histories. Some question as to whether Jean Marie is the head of the Boic ourt
line since no actual information has been found about him.

In the SPEAR FAMILY MEMORIAL SKETCH, W. E. Spear write s of his mother's
grandfather, Thomas L. Boicourt who was a doctor and came to America in
1770. The children we have attributed to Jean Marie may be those of his b rother
    Thomas.

Another feeling is that Jean Marie and Thomas are the s ame person - the
original name being Jean Marie Thomas LaProne deBouicourt. We are still t rying
    to find the answer.

    Dear Jean,

Hope this information is o f use.   It was taken from my Grandfather’s Holy Bible.
It is not a complete record, but it is all that I have.   I cou ld have gone to
Golconda, IL and done research, but I’m not into “in-depth fami ly research”.

There are no records in fa mily Bible of Jean Marie LaProne Boicourt.

I have many letters writte n by my grandfather and grandmother (John Mathis –
Melissa Scranton) and great uncles and great aunts.   And the n ame Jean Marie
is not mentioned.   Nor is there a Kenneth John nor a John Kenn eth (NOTE:
these men are Kenneth Boicourt’s father and grandfather).

If you make a connection o f your family and my family, I would be interested in
    hearing form you.

    Long Lost Relative,

    John W. Boicourt
