The following is the exact wording of the newspaper obituary of Edward Everett Hicks (Presumably from the New Bedford Standard Times)
    -----------------------------------------------------------CAPT. E. E. HICKS DEAD.
-------------------------------------FORTY YEARS AGO WIDELY KNOWN WHALING CAPTAIN
---------Native of Westport, But Parents Moved to This City During His Boyhood - Always Sailed in Vessels of His Uncle, Andrew Hicks.
-----Captain Edward E. Hicks, who about forty years ago was one of the best known whaling masters sailing from this port, died at his home, 98 Hillman Street, this morning, after a long illness. For the past year, he had been confined to the house, as the result of a shock.
-----Captain Hicks was born in Westport in 1844, the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Hicks. He received his education in the schools of Westport and this city, his parents moving to New Bedford during his boyhood. At the age of seventeen years, he made his first voyage sailing, before the mast on the bark Elizabeth, Captain Francis of Westport. Afterward he sailed on bark Sea Fox, as boatsteerer and mate; and about 1870 he made his first voyage as master, commanding the Sea Queen. He had the Sea Queen for one voyage, and in 1873 went out in command of bark Mermaid, making one voyage in her.
-----In 1877, Captain Hicks commanded the bark Andrew Hicks, of which his uncle, the late Andrew Hicks, was agent, cruising in the Indian Ocean. In 1881, he sailed again in the Andrew Hicks, to the Indian Ocean. During this voyage he suffered a sunstroke, and his health was so affected that he found it necessary to leave the vessel and return home. He made several more voyages, but never completely regained his health, and was finally compelled to give up the sea.
-----During his career as a whaling captain, Captain Hicks made very successful voyages, and was several times sought after by other whaling agents, but always remained with his uncle's vessels.
-----Captain Hicks had lived a retired life since his return from his last voyage. He was a member of Star in the East lodge of Masons. Deceased is survived by a widow, two sons, Edward H., and Alexander Hicks of this city; and three daughters, Miss Louise E. Hicks of this city, and Mrs. Elwyn G. Campbell and Mrs. Robert E. Briggs of Fairhaven.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------
(Notes: Logs of Captain Hicks' voyages are included in the archives of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The date of his death was March 15, 1913. The certificate of death lists the cause as "cirrhosis of liver followed by apoplexy" He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery New Bedford, Lot 15, Sec. PP. He was born in Westport, MA on June 28, 1844 to Alexander Hicks and Elizabeth P. Howland. His wife was Abbie Maria Dexter, daughter of Benjamin Dexter and Elizabeth Pease Delano. They had 6 children. Edward was the 8th generation of Hicks' in this country. B. Hall)

All names are spelled "Hicks" for consistency of indexing although some used the "Hix" spelling. A "?" in the middle of a name means parental connection tentative. Corrections and additions are welcome.
