DURHAM - Irene A. Vavasis Stephenson, 83, of Durham, died at Duke University Medical Center, on Thursday, January 1, 2004. Irene was a native of Elmira, N.Y., but had lived in Orange County and Durham for the last 42 years. She was a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church and a former member of Little River Presbyterian Church, Hurdle Mills, NC. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Annette Poole.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Daniel Graydon Stephenson, Jr.; two sons, Daniel "Buddy" Stephenson of Lilburn, Ga.; Graydon Stephenson of Garner; one daughter, Nancy Dillard of Louisburg; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A chapel memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home, 211 S. Miami Blvd., Durham. Mr. Tony Morris will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Durham Rescue Mission, 1201 E. Main Street, Durham, NC 27701, or a charity of your choice - Hudson Funeral Home.
