  • ID: I00509
  • Name: George William "Pioneer George" BYRD 1
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1760 in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia
  • Death: 1825 in Jacks Creek, Buncombe (nka Yancey) County, North Carolina
  • Immigration: 1796 Henrico County, Virginia to Yancey County, North Carolina
  • Burial: 1825 Byrd Cemetery, Moses Angiln Branch, Off Jacks Creek Rd., Yancey County, North Carolina
  • Event: Note GEORGE WILLIAM BYRD and MARY ANN "Annie" HUDSON are my maternal 6th great grand parents.
  • Military Service: Revolutionary War Soldier; Colonel in the Middlesex County Militia in Virginia
  • Reference Number: IND523
  • Note:
Some researchers have Jacks Creek, "Buncombe County, NC", and some say it 's in "Yancey County, NC". Yancey County was formed out of Buncombe
County in 1833. As George died before this date, Jacks Creek (where he ho mesteaded, lived & died) was then Buncombe Co. It is now Yancey Co.,
    NC.

George is listed in the "Historical Register of Virginians in the Revoluti on", and was a 2nd Lt. in the VA Militia. I find him on the 1792 Tax Li st for Montgomery Co. VA. Their first few children were born in VA; aft. 1 792 they emigrated to Yancey Co. NC (formerly Buncombe Co.), where they ho mestead on Jacks Creek, lived, and died.

Byrd and Hudson family lore repeat the story that Annie was sent o ff to a relative's in Charleston, SC so as to keep the two apart; George f ollowed
her, and they were married at her aunt's home in Charlestown (now called C harleston), South Carolina.

George William Byrd, originally from Virginia, and later Tennessee and t he Weaverville section of Buncombe Co., NC, finally settled his fami ly in Jack's Creek, Yancey Co., NC about 1796. He was a veteran of the Rev olutionary War having served as a Colonel in the Middlesex County Milit ia in Virginia. He also served as a scout in Washington's Army, "and was a ssigned to guard the transfer of funds (in gold) from the French to suppo rt the American cause." It has been handed down through the family that wh en Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, "George Byrd was a-standin' right t har and saw it all!" Based on Revolutionary Army Accounts, he used the mon ey, due him for his services, to buy land in North Carolina.
