  • Note:
The McMahan name starts with the sons of Mahan a 5th century King of Leins ter. The name was variously spelled McMahan or MacMahon when it was transl ated from the old Erse/Gaelic spelling phonetically into English Spellin g. In the 13th century the McMahans resided mostly in County Clare and Wex ford, but by the 1600's many lived in Meath and Kildare near Dublin.

Robert McMahan and his wife Catherine O'Brien McMahan (or MacMahon) left D ublin, Ireland in 1746, bound for Virginia. They were accompanied by the ir ten (some say 12) sons. Robert is rumored to have died at sea on the w ay over (not true!) and the rest of his family settled in that part of Aug usta Co., VA that later became Montgomery Co., VA, where Catherine work ed as a housekeeper for David Stuart. She is given the surname Cole in so me Augusta or Montgomery Co records, which I suspect was a second Husba nd who probably also worked for David Stuart. No record has been fou nd of his given name nor are any children known from this second marriage.

AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA, COURT RECORDS, p. 133, 20 Nov 1761.
On 20 Nov 1761, in Augusta County, Virginia, John McMahan and Richard Stoc kton supplied bail for Robert McMahan. It appears that Robert McMahan is t he father of John McMahan. Richard Stockton's daughter Deborah was marri ed to John McMahan. He is also shown on some records as John McMahon. In 1 784 Deborah (nee Stockton) McMahan, by that time the widow of John McMaha n, moved with Robert and Nancy (nee Stockton) Shields to what is now Sevi er County, Tennessee. Deborah and Nancy's brother, Thomas Stockton, Sr., w as already living in what is now Sevier County, Tennessee, when they mov ed there. Thomas Stockton, Sr., lived on the north side of the French Bro ad River, while Deborah, Nancy and Robert Shields located on the south si de of the river.

Robert McMahan Sr (c1760-1822/1823), son of John and Deborah (nee Stockto n) McMahan.

Here is an account of Robert McMahon's execution after murdering Robert Re yburn (Reaburn). This account cites Robert Reyburn as a son of Margaret, R obert McMahon's second wife, but I show Robert as a probable son of Jam es Reyburn and Elizabeth Cole, James being the brother of Edward Reybur n, Margaret's first husband who died in 1754. May need additional research .

Robert McMahan the father of John McMahan of Augusta County, Virgina was e xecuted at the Public Gallows in Williamsburg, James City county, Virgin ia on Friday, May 26, 1769. He murdered Robert Reaburn the son of his seco nd wife Mrs. Margaret Reaburn. He was charged in Augusta county, Virgin ia and sent to Williamsburg for trial where he was found guilty and senten ced to death. The court records of Augusta county show a previous histo ry of violence. He was involved with Samuel Lockhard or Lockhart in killi ng William Thomson's or Thompson's hogs, horses &c. in 1746.
