  • ID: I3354
  • Name: Matilda TAYLOR
  • Sex: F
  • Census: T460 I550 TN, MS, AL, IN
  • Birth: 17 JUN 1789 in Dandridge, Jefferson, TN 1 2 3
  • Death: 01 JAN 1864 in Dubois Co., IN 4 2
  • Burial: Dubois Co., IN
  • Note:
Parents - Col. William & Betty White Taylor, kin to Pres. Taylor & Madison. Her younger brother, Albert Gallatin Taylor married Jennie Inman. She was lured to IN by her father's half-sister, Hannah Rose Edmonston.
1850 CENSUS - Columbia, Dubois, IN roll 143 p 439 fam #207 with Robert Davis family.
  • Note:
    - Information received from Willis Taylor Finley.
    - Sources: Leroy and Lurana Inman Family Bible; Book the Taylor's of Tennessee by Armstrong; Book from Log Cabins to the white house by Brewer; Jefferson Co. TN marriage Records; Census Records in Columbia Twp, Dubois Co. IN. 1840, 1850, and 1860 . Matilda b. at Dandridge, TN. She and husband moved to Alabama ab 1812. (Franklin Co. 1820 Census)
    - Husband, Ezekiel Inman, d. in Alabama. In 1825 Matilda moved back to Dandridge TN and lived on her Father's plantation according to Taylor researchers. In 1837 she is listed living in Bradley Co., TN accoring to the application of her son Argil e who enlisted in the Army at Decatur in Meigs Co., TN in 1837 for the Indian War. In 1840, she and 4 married children are listed in consecutive households in Columbia Twp in Dubois Co., IN. I have identified 7 of her 8 children living in Duboi s and Martin Counties in Indiana Census from 1840 thru 1870.
    - As I find more data about Matilda's issues it has become apparent that she used the surnames of parents and grandparents of both sides of the family in the names of her sons. Such as Parmenas, Taylor, White, Ritchie, Davis, Abednego, Hardi n or Henry (Henry has been very common among her descendants). It could be that Henry may be more correct than Hardin in the Inman ancestory of Abednego Inman. This is the only name out of step and it could be more correct than some believe.
    - Sources: Date of birth listed in Bible of Leroy and Lurana Inman; According to the book "The Taylor's of Tennessee" the Family was living in AL at time of birth. Have not found Betty or Elizabeth for Certain in IN Records. Although living nex t door to Matilda Taylor Inman in Dubois Co. was Henry Damewood, 42, b. TN and Spouse Elizabeth 38 b. IN? with the following Ch: John 20 b. IN; Joseph 17 b. In; Bazel 14 b. IN; Maya J. 12 b. IN; Mahala C. 10 b. IN; Mary A. 7 b. IN; Abedneg o W. 4 b. IN and Henry L. 2 b. IN. This could be Betty W. Inman. Name patterns of children would suggest this. Henry Damewood married 1849 Martha Inman widow of Parmenas Taylor Inman.
    - Elizabeth or Betty Inman is still a likely prospect to be Henry's first wife.
