  • Note: Enlisted April 20, 1862. He is listed as deserted on Oct 30, 1862. Then he apparently reenlisted on Oct 15, 1863. He supposedly deserted again on Feb. 3, 1864, in New Berne, NC ... BUT ... he also is listed (without amplification, even as to whic h side) as having been a POW at Fort Monroe. It can extrapolated that it was a Union prison, thus explaining the second "desertion" -- a capture, not a desertion -- and that he got out of that prison by enlisting in the Union army. (There wa s no info about a release from POW status. Another interpretation, of course, could be that he had had enough with the Confederates and upon release just switched sides.)
