Arnold left home in WV to move to Texas. Shortly after moving, he decided to return to WV for a visit and boarded a train headed east. He got as far as Searcy, AR and when the train stopped to take on water, he got off. There he met Ilar Massey, whose father owned the boarding house next to the railroad tracks. Arnold and Ilar fell in love, married and raised five children in Searcy. He worked many years for the Army Corps of Eng on the Miss. River.
A birth date of 20 Dec 1881 has also been reported. The headstone shows 1882.
The HUGHES family plot in the Oak Grove Cemetary, White Co, Ar is located at 35.25330 degrees by 91.73020 degrees. This is slightly east of the intersection of Moore Street and N. Hussey Street, in Searcy.
The 1930 Census of Searcy, White Co, Ar. shows this family to be living at 500 S. Spring St. Also living with the family was John Massey, age 67, occupation, contractor. This was Ilar's father.
The 1920 census shows his occupation as a labouror for the Government, which would reflect his job with the U.S. Army Corps of Eng. In the 1920 census the address of his house shows to be 500 South Line St. The name is hard to read and it known that they lived at 500 S Spring St. This could indicate the street was once named Line and later changed to Spring.
