Selma was born in a house on McKnight Street in Rutherford, TN.
No birth certificate was issued at that time. In 1943 she petitioned
the Gibson County Court to issue a delayed certificate of birth
supported by an affidavit signed by her sister, Mrs. Sadie
McKinnon Holt. On Oct 12 1943 the honorable Hugh L. Clark,
Gibson County Judge, ordered that the certificate of birth be
issued and was signed by W.W. Taylor, County Clerk.
Selma grew up in Rutherford then moved to Blytheville, AR
with her family after her father died. There she met and
married Herbert Venson Hughes. They lived in Blytheville
for a short period of time, then moved to Longview, TX.
From Longview, TX they moved to Prague, OK. Herbert
joined the Navy during World War II and they moved to
San Diego where he was assigned.
After the war they settled in Memphis, TN. Selma went to
work for Parks-Belk Department Store after Herbert's death.
She retired from there as the manager of the Boys Department.
On 7 DEC 2002, Selma McKinnon Hughes was accepted into
the membership of the Daughters of the American Revolution based on
her descendency from George W Glascock.

SELMA McKINNON HUGHES, 95, of Memphis, former department
manager for Parks Belk Department Store, died Sunday at
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville. Services will be at 2 p.m.
Tuesday at Forest Hill Funeral Home East with burial in Memorial Park.
She was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church and
Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Hughes, the widow
of Herbert Venson Hughes, leaves a son, B. Venson Hughes
of Germantown; two sisters, Flossy Beck of Little Rock and
Magalene Ingram of West Memphis, three grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent
to Crossroads United Methodist Church in Collierville.
