The Hughes Family History

In the 1880's the nickname "Sallie" was often used for women
named Sarah. Documents have been found where Sarah ATKINS
used both names at different times.

The following is a chronological listing of events Referencing Sarah E Atkins:

1849 Sallie Atkins born. This documented by hand written
notes passed down from generation to generation. Notes
received by this compiler were from L.C. Nichols, grandson
of Sallie Atkins.

1850 Census of McNairy Co, Tn, Dist 9, dewelling shows the following family:
Atkins, Turner, age:21, born:N.C.
Atkins, Mary, age: 22, born:Tn.
Atkins, May, age:2, born Tn.
Atkins, Sarah, age: 9 months.

1853-1864 Sallie and her family are apparently living in Mo., possibly in the
Springfield area. Documented by the 1870 census of McNairy
Co, Tn and the death certificate of Seletha E Atkins Needham.

1869 Sallie and her family are living in Tn.
Documented by the 1870 census of McNairy Co, Tn, based on the
place of birth of John D.L. Atkins shown on that census.

shows dewelling #31 as follows:

1874 Sallie gives birth to Edgar Alonzo McKinnon in McNairy Co
Tn.

1876 Sallie gives birth to John A. McKinnon in McNairy Co, Tn.

1879 Sallie gives birth to Arvell Bell McKinnon in McNairy Co, Tn.

1881 Sallie gives birth to Mary Effie McKinnon in McNairy Co, Tn.

1883 17 AUG, Sallie gives birth to a son that dies the next day.
Documented by notes from L.C. Nichols.

1883 Sallie dies, apparently in childbirth. Her body is sent by train to
Gibson Co, Tn where it is met by Ben Tilghman, husband of Sallie's
sister, Mattie (Martha) Atkins. Ben makes arrangements for burial
at North Union Pres Cemetery near Rutherford, Gibson Co, Tn. He
places a stack of bricks to mark her grave site.

1890 About 1890, John B. McKinnon dies and his second wife
sends Sallie's children to live with Sallie's sisters in
Gibson Co, Tn.

1926 Edgar Alonzo McKinnon, Sallie's son, dies and his death
certificate lists his mother as "Sarah Elizabeth Atkins".

2002 Bob Nichols, great grandson to Sallie Atkins McKinnon locates
the stack of bricks used to mark her grave. He arranges for a
marker to be placed showing the dates of birth and death;
18-SEP-1849 - 17 AUG 1883.
