Shortly after the death of his mother, Charles Beverly Hughes
left home with his brother, Arnold Venson Hughes to "seek
their fortune". Arnold stopped in Texas but Beverly (he liked to go by his middle name)
continued to California. He homesteaded an area in the San Jacinto Mountains
just above present day Banning, Ca. Post cards from him to his
relatives in West Virginia indicated he was clearing land for a hunting
camp and also working part time for the Forest Service. On Jan 30, 1911,
he filed for a deed on his land near Idyllwild, Ca in an area
known as "Fuller's Mill". He established a hunting camp here and
named it "Kampers Kingdom". This camp was located near
116.73827 degrees W. by 33.81353 degrees N. also near the present
day location of the Pine Wood community, about 2.5 miles off Highway 243.

From "History of Banning and San Gorgonio Pass" by Tom Hughes,
"C.B. Hughes, a homesteader in the San Jacinto mountains, died
Feb. 29 (1912) while hunting squirrels. He had shot himself in the ankle.
For two days he tried to make his dog carry a note to neighbors before
the animal finally appeared at the Gregg ranch with his tragic message.
Hughes was given first aid by Ranger Decker and brought to town, but
amputation of the foot by Dr. King failed to save his life."

The official death certificate of Charles Beverly Hughes lists the cause of
death as "Pneumonia - following amputation of leg for accidental gun shot wound."
The Doctor's statement lists the 24th of FEB 1912 as the day he was first treated.
This would indicated the accident happened about Feb 21 or 22. Dr.
John King of Banning, signed the death certificate.

Charles Beverly Hughes is buried in the San Gorgonio Memorial Park in Banning, Ca.
in an unmarked grave. His grave is located next to the grave of
one Robert Bruce Chisholm and very near the family plot of another
pioneer Pinewood family, the Bailiffs. San Gorgonio Memorial Park is located
at 2201 San Gorgonio Av, Banning, Ca. 92220 (909-849-3725). The cemetery
is on the west side of San Gorgonia, north of Summit
Road (33.946048 x 116.877312 degrees). Beverly's grave is located in
Block 4, Lot 10E, Grave 2 of the cemetery. This section is located below the
