    BY MRS LAWRENCE(ETHEL) AASE:
My grandparents, Mr & Mrs Hans Holten, immigrated with their four children Anna,Nils, Alfred, and Edward, from Norway in 1883. They came to Minnesota and settled in Wyandotte township. They built a log cabin, and five children; Ted, John, Olaf, and Walter were born in this cabin.
My grandmother was a nurse in Norway, so she served as a midwife in the neighborhood. They farmed with oxen and hauled their wheat to Terrebone to get it ground into flour. Nils was my father. He drove oxen into Red Lake Falls for supplies and froze his feet, so one toe had to be amputated.
They moved into Thief River Falls in 1911 and built a house close to Longs Bridge on Thief River. Anna and Nora had a dress making shop in Thief River. Nora later married Christ Steen. Edward was a blacksmith in Mavie, Hazel and Plummer. Olaf and Walter worked on the Soo Line in 1916.
Rev. Austad stayed at my grandparents home a lot, because they had a barn where he could keep his horses. Grandmother sent Rev. Austad a Bible that had been printed in 1777 and she received a letter of thanks from him. Grandfather died in 1921 and grandmother in 1932.
My father Nils Holten, married Oline strand in 1902. They had their wedding picture taken at the Collins Studio in St. Hilaire. In 1904 my father carried the mail out of St. Hilaire. He also helped to build the Clearwater Church, where my two older brothers were baptized. They moved to North Dakota where my father homesteaded and lived for twenty five years, returning to Thief River Falls in 1932 where we have resided since.
