He was a graduate of Plain Dealing (LA) High School and attended Northwestern State College, Natchitoches (LA) for three years before entering the Navy in 1932. During World War II, he was stationed aboard the U.S. Enterprise Aircraft Carrier, which was bombed, shelled and torpedoed by the Japanese. He was also aboard the ship when it left Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941, the day before Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was awarded the Purple Heart during World War II. His last assignment was shore duty as Naval Inspector on Treasure Island".
