STEPHEN 2 of E.H. b. 1635 d. April 15, 1693, was named in the Indian deed for E.H., 1660. He m. Ist abt. 1660 Sarah, dau. of John and Sarah Bancroft Stratton; she d. by 1684; he m. 2nd. (probably) his Ist wife's sister, Rebecca Stratton Bushnell; she m. 3d., 1694, John Meigs of Guilford, Conn. Stephen Hand 2 had ch.: Stephen 3 b. 1661, Joseph 3 b. 1664, (who rem. to N.J. and d. 1713), Samuel 3 b. abt. 1665, and five daus., probably Abigail 3 who m. Nov. 30, 1696 Jacob Griswold of Guilford, Conn.; Elizabeth 3 b. abt. 1668-72, d. 1711, (who m. Daniel Osborn 3, s. of Thomas and Mary Bond Osborn; Daniel m. 2nd. Nov. 3, 1712, Elizabeth, probably dau. of Stephen Hedges); Sarah 3 (who m. Thomas Howell of Bridgehampton), Esther 3 (who m. Samuel Mulford), and another.
It must have been Stephen Hand 2 for whom Stephen Hand's Path was named. On Nov. 3, 1668, he granted the Town of E.H. leave to put a highway through his woodland, 12 feet wide, "only to drive carts and oxen in yoake & to ride & lead a horse through; not to drive cattle through out of yoake". Stephen 2 was Constable 1674 and 1680 and in 1683 was chosen one of a committee to join Southampton in selecting a representative for the First Colonial Assembly under Governor Dongan. ----------------------------------------------------- A HAND FAMILY - by Harriet Woodbury Hodge, C.G. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 81-82589 Stephen Hand's will, written 17 May 1688 and probated 2 May 1693, mentions his wife (unnamed), sons Stephen (eldest), Joseph (living, but apparently not at East Hampton in 1688), and Samuel (youngest) to have the homestead after wife's decease or remarriage: and five unnamed daus, all under age eighteen. Widow Rebecca Hand, administratrix in 1693, [VV-pp. 76-78 1. Children by first wife Sarah- 1) STEPHEN, b. abt. 1661; 2) JOSPEH, b. a bt. 1664; By second wife Rebecca3) SAMUEL, b. abt. 1667; 4)probably ALICE, m. 26 Nov. 1690 at Saybrook, CT, M, WILLIAM SHIPMAN; 5) REBECC A, m. 20 July 1694 at Guilford, CT M, JOHN MEIGS; 6) ABIGAIL, of Guilford, CT, "daughter of Stephen" m. JACOB GRISWOLD, "last" Nov. 1696, [VI; and two other daughters, born after 1670. ------------------------------------------------------- When reading the articles about the Hand Family from two genealogists, the information becomes somewhat cloudy. One states that Steven's first wife Sarah, d; "by 1684", while the other states her death being abt. 1664-65. I followed the lead from A HAND FAMILY. I also have a question about Alice b: Jan 2, 1669/70 and Elizabeth b: Jan 27, 1671 because these same girls(?) are also born to Benjamin ( brother of Stephen) on approximate dates. Rattray does not mention Alice, whereas Hodges states "probably Alice" and does not mention Elizabeth. - Herb.
