      In 1895 W.N. Heald made a gift of much of the land surrounding the big house to his son, James Heald, a Manchester solicitor, who lived at Ellerslie, 19 Didsbury Park, now known as Ellerslie Guest House. James Heald was much interested in the local organization of the Conservative Party. He built and owned the Didsbury Conservative Club and was chairman of the Stretford Conservative Association when Mr. C.A. Cripps, later Lord Parmoor, and father of Sir Stafford Cripps, was High Tory Member of Parliament for that constituency. He was married to Nettie Stewart Brown, one of a well known family of Liverpool, to which city he moved after his retirement from legal practice in 1909. He very soon joined Liverpool Corporation and when Didsbury Library was declared open on 15th May, 1915, he was present as Chairman of the Liverpool Libraries Committee.

      On 7th August 1902 the League [for amalgamation with Manchester of the Urban District of Withington] held its first public meeting in a comittee room of the West Didsbury Public Hall... Mr James Heald, of Didsbury Park [one of several well-known local figures approached to take the chair] replied rather curtly that he was strongly opposed to any amalgamation with Manchester and therefore did not need to say more.

      James Heald died in 1921, leaving his wife and two sons, William Henry Arthur Heald and Lionel Frederick Heald, surviving him.
