  • Note:
At the time of the 1900 census, he was a farmer in Mills County, Texas, and rented his land. At the time of the 1910 census, he was a farmer in Mills County, Texas, and owned his land.

When he registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was a farmer and merchant in Center City, Mills County, Texas. His nearest relative was his wife, Alice Bula (sp). He was shown as medium height and medium build. At the time of the 1920 census, he was a farmer in Mills County, Texas, and owned his land. At the time of the 1930 census, he was a retail merchant, groceries in Mills County, Texas. On the 1940 census, Calvin reported no occupation. He was still living on his farm in Center City, Mills County, Texas. The three youngest sons were still at home, Edward A., Woodrow W., and Eldridge T. (shown as George T.) His wife gave the report. The farm was listed as being worked by Edward. Woodrow had income from odd jobs.

It was a common belief in the community that a survey was made at one time and that Center City was declared the center of the State of Texas with the historical old live oak tree representing the living marker. The first post office opened June 4, 1877. Later it was combined with a grocery store. (The store was once known as "Hughes Store". Calvin Head bought the store from Tom Beck. Head sold it to R. G. Hendry.) The post office was discontinued on August 31, 1920 with Calvin Head as the last postmaster. The old live oak stands in front of the old post office building.

If you study my sources, you will see that I haven't done much research before the 1850 census. I have some material based on Bible entries, DAR applications, local history books, and wills for earlier periods but need to do a lot more work on the lines further out. Please contact me with updates and corrections.
