    At the time of the 1850 census, Lewis was a farmer in Lafayette County, Mississippi. He had real estate valued at $400. The family moved to Texas between 1853 and 1855. At the time of the 1860 census, Lewis was farming in Bell County, Texas. He had real estate valued at $1100 and personal assets of $600. At the time of the 1870 census, Lewis was still farming in Bell County, Texas. He had real estate valued at $700 and personal assets of $1000. He was still farming in Bell County,Texas, at the time of the 1880 census.

    In later census years, several of his children gave his birthplace as Mississippi.
