At the time of the 1860 census, he had real estate valued at $4000 in Sweetwater, Monroe County, Tennessee, and personal assets of $800. He was a farmer. On the 1880 census, Burrell was listed as a farmer in Monroe County, Tennessee. He reported that his parents were born in Pennsylvania.
