At the time of the 1850 census, Margaret was listed with Alfred George and ten children, many of whom were too old to be hers. She was 33 and the oldest child was 24. At the time of the 1860 census, Margaret was running a boarding house in Callaway County, Missouri. John Anderson, shown as 7 in 1850, was now listed as 14. He was a student. Pauline Wilson 60 and John Wilson 32, both born in Kentucky, were listed with the family. At the time of the 1870 census, she was living in Denver, Colorado, with her daughter Anna and husband Jasper Sears.

October 20, 1863 in Fulton, Calloway County, Missouri, Margaret filed Petition for Partition on the will of the late Alfred George. She then came to Colorado with her son John Anderson, son and daughter Alfred and Annie Love George, and two Negro females (names unknown but age old). Traveling with them also was Jack Wiley, referred to as Uncle Jack, but no family connection has been found. They entered Colorado Territory making their first stop at Canon City where they stayed for a few years before moving to Denver. Margaret died there and the Rocky Mountain News, October 10, 1871, notes funeral services for Margaret George were held from the home of J. P. Sears on Champa Street.
She was buried in Pioneer Cemetery which is now the site of Denver Botanical Garden. When the land was converted to the gardens, her remains were moved to Riverside Cemetery.
