Note: Johann came to America in 1849 from the town of Havelberg, Prignitz, Brandenburg, Prussia with his wife and two grown children. They traveled steerage on the ship, Bark Hamburg, from Hamburg, Germany, leaving 3 Oct 1849, to Galveston, Texas, arriving 15 Dec 1849. Johann's occupation was listed as tailor.
At the time of the 1850 census, they were living in Austin County, Texas. Johann (shown as John) listed his occupation as tailor. Daughter Sophie was not listed with the family.
Naturalization: Austin County, Texas. 7 Nov 1855 (Transcription of records available at http://www.txgenweb2.org/txaustin/Nat/G.html shows the date as 7 Nov 1855 and that of the son as 7 Nov 1853. This was a typographical error. The dates for both on the handwritten original records are 7 Nov 1855. Also both of them were starting to use the name Charles instead of Carl.)
At the time of the 1860 census, he was farming in Austin County, Texas. He had real estate valued at $300 and personal assets of $100. At the time of the 1870 census, he was still farming in Austin County, Texas. He had real estate valued at $250. Louise Stoehr, 70 born in Oldenburg, and Heimrich Schroeder, 24 born in Lippe-Detmold a farm laborer, were listed with him and his wife Barbara.
He was inconsistent in giving his age: given as 47 in 1849, 49 in 1850, 55 in 1860, and 69 in 1870. I've used the estimate given on his German emigration record.--Rose Lee Wall 2009
