Note: In a photo of him taken about 1872 he wears a three-piece suit with a Zouave-style jacket (fastened only at the top and with a curved front exposing the waistcoat underneath. At the time collars were still relatively small and turned-over. A later photo, taken in St Albans presumably in 1890 as the photo is in a double frame with his wife shows him dressed in the uniform of a Scottish regiment with a special pattern of jacket with a cut away front, worn with a regimental tartan trews. Was it the 91st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders? He first went to work on 24th May, 1878, at Verulaneum House, Verulaneum, St Albans. He was a churchwarden. In 1881 he was still living at home in Bedford Road, St. Albans, with his father, step-mother and brother Mark. In 1891 he and Ellen were living at 23, Ariel Rd, Hampstead, where they shared a house with another family, living in two rooms. In 1901 he was described as a railway accountant and living at 37, St Paul's Rd, St Pancras, London. 1911 Address 19 Marquis Rd Camden Rd N W London District St Pancras Subdistrict East St Pancras Enumeration District 9 Parish St Pancras Howard, Walter Head Married M 45 Railway Clerk Herts St Albans Howard, Ellen Wife Married 20 F 48 London Holborn Howard, Walter Robert Son Single M 19 Civil Engineers Clerk London Hampstead Howard, Ellen Maud Daughter Single F 16 Dressmaker London St Pancras Howard, Albert John Son Single M 10 School Boy London St Pancras RG14PN719 RG78PN25 RD9 SD3 ED9 SN42
Responsible for freight, he worked for the LNER out of Euston for 40 years, until he retired in 1924. At Christmas he would bring home gifts given to him by the merchants for whom he arranged shipments on the railway. These would include cases of wine, bottles of port, sherry, whisky, gin and a whole stilton which Grandad would pour port over and then scoop out portions of the cheese. His wife was a teetotaller so I wonder who drank this. They were active in the Somerstown Presbyterian Church where the minister was a Zebediah Woffendale. According to Val Walter had a mischevious sense of humour and used to tease her. She remembers him as being tall and slim as was his son Jack.

Note: (Medical):Post mortem but no inquest. Informant was his son, A J Howard of 94, Hereford Road, London, W2. He was a retired Railway Accountant. £413 15s 4d. Probate to his two sons.

The Regent Square Presbyterian Church (see LMA/4147) first started a mission in the Somers Town and Saint Pancras area in 1843, using a variety of buildings to host their meetings. In 1874 Goldington Crescent Church, near Mornington Crescent, was purchased as a permanent building and the name Goldington Crescent Presbyterian Church was adopted. By 1881 the congregation had outgrown this building and subsequently raised the funds to build a new, larger church and hall on Ossulston Street, Somers Town, designed by architect George Lethbridge. The new church was opened in 1882 and the church was renamed Somers Town Presbyterian Church. The church does not appear in the Presbyterian Church Official Handbook for 1971 and is likely to have closed before this date. http://www.aim25.ac.uk/cgi-bin/vcdf/detail?coll_id=12674&inst_id=118&nv1=search&nv2=
