MITCHELL - Ralph S. "Smitty" Harris, 77, 133 N. First St., Mitchell, died at 11:45 a.m. Monday at Dunn Memorial Hospital.
He was retired as the assistant street commissioner for the City of Bedford and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his companion, Nancy Burlington, Mitchell; two sons: Ralph Smith Harris Jr., Vancouver, Wash., and Chris Harris, Bedford; two daughters: Frances Porter, Huron and Lucy Godsey, Bedford; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, George Harris; and one sister, Rosalie Terry, Bedford.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Stevens officiating. Burial will follow with military rites accorded by members of the Gillen Post No. 33 of the American Legion.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford.

MITCHELL - Ralph S. "Smitty" Harris, 77, of 133 N. First Street, Mitchell, died at 11:45 a.m. Monday at the Dunn Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 17, 1929, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Ralph L. and Doris (Williams) Harris. He married Barbara Ballengee on January 20, 1953, and she preceded him in death on September 26, 1992.
He retired in 1992 as the assistant street commissioner for the city of Bedford. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War and attended Friendly Bible Church.
Survivors include his companion, Nancy Burlington of Mitchell; two sons: Ralph Smith Harris Jr. and wife Josie of Vancouver, Wash., and Chris Harris of Bedford; two daughters: Frances Porter and husband Barry of Huron, and Lucy Godsey and husband Danny of Bedford; seven grandchildren: Renee Strange, Jamie Hillenburg, Joe Hillenburg, Daniel Godsey, Joanna Salvaty, Sabrina Harris and Audrey Harris; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, George Harris of Williams; one sister, Rosalie Terry of Bedford; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one granddaughter, Barbara Godsey; one great-grandson, Daniel Olin Godsey; one sister, Mildred Smith; and two brothers, Wayne and Donald Harris.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Stevens officiating. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Nancy Burlington

Nancy C. Burlington, 70, passed away at 12:14 p.m. Thursday, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born Jan. 18, 1941, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Jesse and Mary Frances (Cole) Lane. She married Estel David Burlington Aug. 12, 1960, and he preceded her in death Dec. 31, 1996.
She had been employed at Spring Mill Inn and attended the Bride of Christ Fellowship.
Surviving are daughters, Tina Harris of Mitchell, Terry (Duane) Edmonson of Mitchell and Tonya (Trever) Cooper of Mitchell; a brother, Jesse Lane of Mitchell, a sister, Lettie Coffman of Bedford; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Her parents; husband; brothers, Herschel, Roy, and Elwood Lane; and sister, Betty Kautz, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Brothe Jerry Allen officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3-6 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Ballengee of Washington, D. C. announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Barbara Lee Ballengee to Pfc. R. Smith Harris of Ft. Meade, Md., son of Mrs. Doris Harris, 2122 Twenty fourth street, Bedford.
The wedding took place on January 20 in the Oxon Hill Methodist Church, Oxon Hill, Md. with the Rev. William C. Harpoid reading the single ring rite.
Miss Deloris Ann Ballengee, sister to the bride was maid of honor. Pfc. Jim Robertson of Ft. Meade was best man.
The groom is with the Anti-aircraft Artillery and is now residing with his bride at 6852 C Allentown Road, Washington, D.C.

MR. AND MRS. Ralph (Smitty) Harris, 2130 Norton Lane are celebrating their 30th anniversary today. They were married at the Oxen Hill Methodist Church, Oxen Hill, Md., on Jan. 29, 1953, with the Rev. Harold Harpo officiating.
Mrs. Harris is the former Barbara Ballengee, daughter of Howard Ballengee, Tracey, Calif., and the late Lucy Ballengee. Mr. Harris is the son of Mrs. Doris Harris, Bedford and the late Ralph Harris.
They have four children: Mrs. David (Frances) Hillenburg, Mrs. Danny (Lucy) Godsey, PO2 Smith Harris in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Subic Bay, Philippines, and Chris, a first grader at Parkview School. They also have three grandchildren.
