Note: William "Buck" Guttery was born in Townley, Alabama on December 12, 1825. He served the Confederacy as a Private in Company L, 1st Alabama Cavalry. It has been reported that he killed a General of Johnson Willis's Division. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Williams, in Walker County, Alabama. They had three children, John Mason, James M., and Columbus D. After Elizabeth Williams' death in May 1858, Buck remarried and moved to Texas with his second wife, Elizabeth Shirley, and some other family members in the 1850s and 1860s; including his sister Elizabeth Guttery Baker. They first settled around DeWitt County (Cuero area) for one crop year and then moved to the Luling area (at least in Caldwell and Guadalupe Counties). William and Elizabeth Shirley had nine more children.
William died in Luling, Caldwell County, Texas on April 6, 1890 and is buried at Old Highsmith Cemetery, off Hwy 90. His headstone reads, "12 Dec. 1825 - 6 April 1890 Aged 64 yrs. 3 months & 24 days" "Farewell, My Wife and Children All, From You a Father, Christ Doth Call. Mourne Not For Me, It is Vain To Call Me To Your Side Again".
Of all the children in William's second marriage, only Levi and BFC are known to have lived into adulthood. BFC died when a well he was digging caved in on him (approx. 20 yrs. old at time of death and married). There is no other information on Sarah E. other than a date of birth shown as 11-15-1864. All other children were born between 1862 and 1873 but didn't live longer than a few days or months. ========================================================================== ========= 1850 Walker County, Alabama US Census

Buck married Elizabeth Williams. They had three children; John Mason "Leggs", James M., and Columbus C. Guttery. William "Buck" Guttery married a second time to Elizabeth Christine Shirley. His first wife died on May 28, 1858 in Walker County, Alabama. Buck and Elizabeth Christine had eight biological children; Levi, B.F.C., Sarah E., Mary A., Robert, Loucinda, William Jr., and Absalom. They also adopted a daughter, Linda J. Sparks. The family moved to Texas, possibly settling in between Luling and Seguin, Texas (just off Highway 90). His headstone is inscribed: "Farewell, my wife and children all, from you a father, Christ doth Call. Mourne not for me, it is vain to call me to your side again". The cemetery is on private property and damage to the headstone may be the result of grazing cattle, now fenced. =============
