    HAMMAN, Velnoe M.
    Portage, MI
After a courageous battle with cancer, Velnoe Marguerite (Welty) Hamman passed away on Sunday evening, September 12, 2004. She was born on December 5, 1919 at her grandmother's farm in Schoolcraft, MI, the eldest daughter of William and Thelma Welty. Family and friends will always remember her for her enthusiastic outlook on life and her seemingly endless energy. Velnoe graduated from Lawton High School in 1937, as president of her senior class. She continued her education at Parson's Business College, assuming the responsibility of president of thecollege's ARCAI Sorority. But it was in Lawton that she met and married her high school sweetheart, Lawrence L. (Red) Hamman on September 1,1939. The couple spent 53 happy years together before he passed away in1992. Red and Velnoe settled into the Vicksburg community in 1953 and raised 4 children in Vicksburg. The couple owned and operated the MobilOil Bulk- Plant, in Kalamazoo for many years until the business was soldin 1975. In later years, Velnoe was employed with the Parchment Medical Center, the Upjohn Company and continued to work part-time at the Portage H&R Block Office during tax season for many years. She said she was "the voice of H&R Block" working as their receptionist until spring of 2003, at age 83! In 1973, Red and Velnoe moved to Parchment, living there until she moved to Portage in 1992. She was always involved in the communities where she lived. Most recently, she had been an active volunteer at the Portage Senior Center, where she made many good friends over the last decade. She had also volunteered for Bronson Hospital, at the Kellogg Forest and the Kalamazoo Humane Society. She loved being outdoors anduntil this spring, rarely went a day without walking. Until just 2 yearsago she was an avid bicyclist (a member of the "Portage Peddlers") and was even featured in a Kalamazoo Gazette article highlighting the importance of senior physical fitness. Over the past 20 years, she was able to travel and enjoyed different cultures; she even bicycled across two different countries in her late 70's (peddling an average of 36miles/day across Austria during her last trip in 1998). Her zest for life has been an example for other seniors, friends and family. She will be deeply missed in their lives. Velnoe loved her family dearly, and took great joy in being part of each family member's life. She was not only a strong role model for her children, but also for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are one sister, Avonne Hooker of Spring Hills, FL; and a brother, Kenneth Welty of Pierson, MI (along with many nieces and nephews). Velnoe leaves behind four children and their spouses, Dave (and Bev) Hamman of Ludington, Suzanne (and Larry) Shelton of Portage, Ken (and Joan) Hamman of Brighton, and Sally (and Gordon) Mayne of Lawton. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Linda Luteyn, Robin Betke, Brian Hamman, Michael Shelton, Thomas Shelton, Steven Shelton, Nick Lehmkuhl, Adam Lehmkuhl, Jessica Berry and Thea Hamman, as well as 19 great-grandchildren (leaving each one with special memories). A Memorial Service and celebration of her life will be held at the Hearthside Apartment Clubhouse at 7566 Currier Drive, on Sunday,September 19, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. The family is being served by Langeland Family Funeral Homes.
