Nathaniel Fields was born about 1728, probably in Hanover County, Virgini a. He served as a private in Captain Alexander Rose's Company in the Six th Virginia Regiment of Continental Forces, commanded by Lieut. Col. Jam es Hendricks. He died while in service, April 1, 1777.

In 1779, his widow, Mary Fields, and children were granted four hundred a nd forty acres, of land on the east side of Mayo Mountain in Guilford Coun ty, North Carolina (Guilford later became Rockingham Co.) It was from th is survey of land that Mary Fields and her orphan children, the childr en of Nathaniel Fields, deceased, were identified by name, Ansel, John, Ag nes (Agathy), William, Elija, Susanna, Nelson and Allen Fields. The two ol dest children Ansel and John also served in the Revolution, and it was fr om John Fields' application for pension that we learned that the family mo ved from Hanover County, Virginia to Rowan County, North Carolina in 1765.

Next to the youngest child, Robert Nelson Pleasant Fields was born Februa ry 26, 1768 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died in Williamson Count y, Tennessee February 11, 1839. Of this number seven settled in the western section of Tennessee and Ke ntucky, called "The Jackson Purchase", Nelson, Jr. being one of this numbe r. Nelson Fields, Jr. and his wife, Mary Rankin moved from Davidson Count y, Tennessee, near Nashville to what is now Fulton County, Kentucky, settl ing on land bought in 1828 from the Commonwealth of Kentucky for 50 cen ts an acre; land known as the Highlands addition of Fulton (still pa rt of Hickman Co. at that time; Fulton Co being created from southern sect ion of Hickman in 1846) Their home place was the site of the Derby Ca fé on the State Line Road. Their 10 children were: John G. who married h is first cousin, Mary Ann Fields; Ambrose Peter who married Lavina Whitese ll and Catherine Whitesell; George Washington who married Susan Emily Herr ing; Nicholas who married Margaret Bard (also sp Baird); Sarah Catherine w ho married Peter Whitesell; James Henry Green who married Sarah Ware Brans ford; Emaline Tennessee who married James J.
