From "Legacy-Early Families of Giles Co" by Margaret Butler: He was gradu ated from Wurtemburg Academy in 1841, from the University of Nashvil le in 1845, and from Harvard in 1848. He attended the Livingston Law Scho ol in New York, then returned to Pulaski and became with Judge Lunsfo rd M. Bramlett. He moved to Panola County, Mississippi where his family h ad extensive agricultural interest. There he met and married Miss Ma ry E. Laird, daughter of Dr. Henry Laird of Belmont, and formerly of Old L ynnville. John and Mary moved to Memphis where he was practicing law wh en the Civil War broke out. He enlisted as a private in the Shelby Coun ty Dragoons and became noted for courage and derringdo. In 1865 he was no tified that he had been promoted to the rank of Brigadier General but befo re he could go to Selma to receive his commission, the war ended. Capt. B allentine returned to Pulaski and resumed his law practice. John and Ma ry had 4 children, all of whom remained unmarried.
