Miss Danford Gets The Plum ----------------- Will Be appointed Postmistress at Stonington to Succeed late Mr Gregg.
Special to the Herald
Stonington, Ill. Nov. 29 -- If reports are true the postoffice fight at Stonington has been settled temporarily at least. It is claimed that Col. Dick Stone has in his possession a letter from Senator Cullom, in shich the senator says he will recommend the appointment of Miss Bertha Danford, the capable assistant postmaster for a number of years. Miss Danford got in the field with a petition right after the death of Postmaster Gregg, and nearly all the patrons of the office signed it. A. D. Housley, the other active applicant, didn't get out a petition, but went after the politicians. It is predicted that if Miss Danford is appointed it will be to fill the vacancy in Mr. Gregg's term, which expires next June or July and that then the politicians will get in their work and Mr Housley will be appointed.
The Daily Review DECATUR. ILLINOIS, SUNDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 12, 1905 STONINGTON SCENTS VIGOROUS PROTEST ------------ Frineds of Postmistress Who Married Dislike Housley's Appointment. ------- (Review Special Service.) Stonington, Ills., NOV. 11. -- Frineds of Mr and Mrs W L Finson are vigorously camplaining because of the appointment of A D Housley as postmaster of the Stonington postoffice. The appointment has just been announced, but has already stirred up some trouble. Mrs. Finson, who was till recentlyMiss bertha Danford, was for two years postmistress. Before that she had been assistant to the postmaster. On his death her efficiency obtained her the position. The postoffice rules required her to resign when whe married. She and her firends, however, went to Congressman Rives of Litchfield and asked for the appointment of her husband, W. L. Finson, formerly a Decatur lawyer and the partner of O C Adams, now manager of the Mansfield Grain company. In the meanwhile Mr Housley got busy, A strong Yates man, Mr Housley was till recently conunt game warden. He has many friends and is influential here. Senator Cullom interested himself and secured the appointment of Mr Housley, much to the disappointment of Mrs Finson and her friends. The latter are now thinking of trying to obtain reconsideration of the appointment.
The Decatur Review Tuesday Evening, November 14, 1905 FROM THE PEOPLE Stonington Postmastership. Stonington, Ill., Nov, 13, 1905 Editor Review: The article which appeared in Sunday's Review in requard to the postoffice situation at this place was evidently concocted by some one who was either ignorant of the facts in the case or else had littlw reguard for the truth. Not only are the personal friends of Mr and Mrs Finson "complaining," but the entire population of the town and vicinity, with few exceptions, are indignant at the trickery and underhand work used by the "bunch" in securing the appointment of their protege. The article in Sunday's Review stated that Mrs. Finson was, according to postal rules, compelled to resign upon her marriage. This is orroneous. All that is required is a reappointment by the department. Since the announcement of Mr. Housley's appointment a petition has been circulated protesting against the action, which almost every patron of the office has signed. The petition which Mr. Housley presented to Mr. Rives to secure his endorsement contained only about a half dozen names and most of those were relatives of the applicant. This petition, heavily reinforced by a strong pull with the Taylorville politicians, resulted in the appointment. It was also stated in Sunday's paper that after the marriage of Miss Danford, her friends went to Litchfield to see Hon. Zeno Rives with the intention of having her husband, W L Finson, appointed. This is another untruth, Mr Finson did not make application for the office and the fight has been openly conducted in his wife's name. STONINGTON CITIZEN.
