  • ID: I00154
  • Name: JOHN POWELL
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1 APR 1772 in PA
  • Death: 18 MAR 1839 in Adair Co., KY
  • Burial: MAR 1839 Adair Co., KY
  • Note:
Every available record about the early life of John Powell has been copied but the deed where he sold his Woodford County land on Delaney's Ferry Road has not been found nor the deed of its purchase, since he had been married four years, he may have set up housekeeping on this farm. The ad he placed in the "Kentucky Gazette" which was the earliest newspaper of the Woodford-Fayette area, reads: March 9, 1798

"For Sale. A valuable tract of land containing 152 acres about 60 acres cleared, a good peach and apple orchard, a very good dwelling house and kitchen, a good barn and other convenient houses. The said tract of land lies on the waters of Clear Creek about 14 miles from Lexington, the road leading from Lexington to Delaney's ferry runs by the said place. Any person wishing to purchase may know the terms by applying to the subscriber living on the premises."
    John Powell-

An ad, the same issue, "Taken up by the subscriber, living at his ferry on the Kentucky River, Mercer County - a mare - Joseph Delany. ~ -- ~.

This last item has nothing to do with John Powell but gives the owner of the ferry and its location.

I wonder what terms John mentioned in his ad were, did he sell for all

cash or a land o contract?
In Book of Entries, p. 220, Green County, Kentucky: August 21,1799 John Powell enters 200 acres of second-rate land by virtue of a certificate for settlement Number 1236, on the waters of Glenn's Fork. Beginning at a dogwood marked J.P., thence with a line of Robert Kelso's entry and to extend 4O poles passing Kelso's corner thence to a line of John Morrison's survey thence with his line east, thence to a hoe of Samuel Dooley's entry, thence with his line and to the beginning for quantity including his improvement.

The estate record for John Powell is found in Order Book H, page 162 dated 5 August 1851, and page 168 dated 1 September 1851, mentions Casey and
    Jessamine Counties, Kentucky.
