On this day Dolores and I stood by the grave of Henry Clay Allen, Julia Allen Powell's Brother, who died in the Civil War. The grave is marked by a plain limestgone marker in the midst of many similar gravestones on the side of a grass-covered hill in the Cave Hill National Cemetery, Louisville, KY. Like the other military graves it was decorated with an American flag for the day. Henry C. Allen served in Co. L of the 6th Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry (Union) from Sept 14, 1862 until his death from disease on june 10 1863
Died in the hospital of pneumonia/typhoid while serving in the Union Army. He was with the 6th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry.
6th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry
6th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1862 with men from the central and eastern section of Kentucky. It was mustered into Confederate service in September. For a time the unit skirmished in Kentucky attached to Buford's Brigade, then it fought with J.H. Morgan. Most of its members were captured at Buffington Island on July 19 and the remaining part at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. Its commanders were Colonel J. Warren Grigsby, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas W. Napier, and Major William G. Bullitt.
